Collection was stamped and postmarked on 200th anniversary of his birth in 1957

The Office of Alumni Affairs, in conjunction with the Class of 1957, is offering alumni the opportunity to purchase one of the framed commemorative envelopes honoring the Marquis de Lafayette.

On Sept. 6, 1957, the 200th birthday of the Marquis, Ray Jacoby ’57 took a collection of envelopes produced by the College to commemorate the date, affixed three-cent stamps bearing the image of the Marquis, and had the Lafayette College Bicentennial Station postmark them.

The envelopes, marked “First Day of Issue,” are framed with a plaque stating “1757-2007: 250th Anniversary of the Birth of the Marquis de Lafayette” and “1832-2007: 175th Anniversary of the First Class at Lafayette College.”

To order, write a check for $20 payable to Lafayette College, with “Marquis envelope” in the memo field, and send it to Alumni Affairs, 223 Pfenning Alumni Center, Easton, PA 18042.
