‘An Africanist’s View of Liberty and Liberation’ will be Sept. 13
Wanjiru Ngige, a London lawyer who is a native of Kenya, will host a public roundtable discussion, “An Africanist’s View of Liberty and Liberation,” 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Kirby Hall of Civil Rights room 104.
While on campus, Ngige will also conduct seminars in three classes: Introduction to Women’s Studies, The Black Experience, and African Cultural Institutions. Her stay is co-sponsored by the Women’s Studies and Africana Studies programs.
According to Carolynn Van Dyke, March Professor of English and coordinator of Women’s Studies, Ngige’s visit holds special relevance considering that numerous events during the Marquis de Lafayette’s yearlong 250th celebration focus on “Lives of Liberty.” Van Dyke says Ngige will be able to speak to the issues of liberty and liberation from an African standpoint.
“She will bring an international perspective to both Women’s and Africana studies that we might not be able to provide otherwise,” says Van Dyke.
Ngige holds an LLB (with a specialization in law with human resource management) and an M.A. in international relations (with a dissertation on E.U./African trade relations) from Keele University in the United Kingdom.
