I am pleased to report that the Plan for Lafayette was approved by the Board of Trustees on October 20, 2007, after receiving a unanimous vote of support from our faculty earlier in the month. With our new strategic plan in place, we look forward to the future with energy and ambition.
The Plan for Lafayette is the product of an intensive, yearlong process that fully engaged all areas of our community. Through it all we were guided by our highest aspiration for Lafayette—to see our college become a truly great institution that has a major impact on its students, its community, and the broader world, including the world of higher education. How do we create a college in the new century that respects tradition but looks to the future?
Throughout this collaborative process it was especially gratifying to me to see the commitment and ownership of so many constituencies of the College as we crafted our shared vision and recommendations. This is a plan that will work because we created it together, and we will implement it together.
And perhaps even more important, we look forward to continued discussion, evaluation, and review as we move ahead with planning and implementation in the years to come.
It is a plan that aims to invest in our greatest resource, the quality of the faculty, to enrich the curriculum by accenting the global nature of knowledge, explore initiatives in the life sciences, strengthen programs in the arts, promote diversity by ensuring that a Lafayette education is available to anyone who qualifies academically, and furthers the ties between the College and its community.
The document that was approved by the Board is available for viewing on the College’s homepage by clicking on the Strategic Planning link at the bottom right of the page. This magazine’s cover story by Robert J. Bliwise ’76 gives insight into the process and perspectives of many of those who helped guide and shape the effort.
I am grateful to all who participated in this process. And I am confident that together we will achieve our goals for Lafayette to be recognized as a premier small college that is academically distinguished and international in reach and presence.
