Steve Serling '10

Former Lafayette men’s lacrosse star and economics graduate Steve Serling ’10 was drafted ninth in the 2011 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft held in Baltimore, Md. Serling, who is now a graduate student at Hofstra University, was selected by the Denver Outlaws.

While at Lafayette, Serling garnered a number of awards both on and off the field culminating in his senior season where he earned the 2010 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honor. He was a first-team selection to the All-Patriot League. He was also named to the 2010 All-America team by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. In the classroom, he was named a scholar all-American.

In his three seasons at Lafayette (missed junior season to injury), Serling amassed 96 career points (72 goals and 24 assists). He started all 14 games for the Leopards last year and tallied 37 goals and added 12 assists. In his senior season, he ranked first in the Patriot League and ninth in Division I for goals. He was also second in the league and 18th in the country in total points.

Serling earned two Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week awards last year, the first coming after an eight-point game against Fairfield in the season-opener, followed by April 13 wins over Marist and Holy Cross, where he tallied seven goals.

Serling was instrumental in the Leopards’ success in 2010, leading the squad as a co-captain to its first-ever Patriot League Tournament berth. Lafayette held a national ranking for eight consecutive weeks, climbing as high as No. 8 in the country. The Leopards also defeated its first two nationally-ranked opponents (Navy and Bucknell) in school history.

“I am not surprised that Steve was drafted so high,” Lafayette head coach Terry Mangan says. “He certainly would have had this opportunity last year if he did not choose to use his final year of eligibility to earn an MBA. I am very proud of him and I believe, along with many others, that he will be one of the best players in the country this spring.”

The 2011 Leopards are currently in the opening days of preseason and open the year at home vs. Fairfield on Feb. 19. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
