The 639 members of the Class of 2015 will begin their college careers Aug. 25 during the first day of Lafayette’s new student orientation.
The students officially will be welcomed to the College community Thursday afternoon during Convocation ceremonies opening the 180th academic year. President Daniel H. Weiss, Student Government president Matthew Grandon ’12, and other speakers will welcome the class to campus.
The four-day program is designed to focus on students’ intellectual and personal development and to help ease the transition to college life. The theme of orientation, and other curricular and co-curricular activities throughout the year, is “Righting Civil Wrongs.” Students will be introduced to the vibrancy of intellectual life at Lafayette by exploring the struggles faced by people around the world. The primary summer reading assignment was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.
A group of first-year students has already been working on campus and in the Easton community as part of the College’s Pre-Orientation Service Program. Projects include renovation work in the West Ward Neighborhood, a summer day camp at Firth Youth Center, and crafts and games at the Easton Area Senior Center.
Classes begin Monday, Aug. 29, for new and returning students.
