Sticks, Hook, and the Mobius: Knit and Crocheting Go Cerebral, an exhibit in the Williams Center Gallery, kicked off with a “yarn bombing” led by guest curator and Easton resident Susan Huxley. Members of the Lafayette and Easton communities were invited to help attach afghans to the handrail of the staircase that links North Third Street to Lafayette’s main campus as a symbol of unity.
The exhibition, running through Feb. 8, showcases innovate ways that contemporary stitchers, both knitters and crocheters, are redefining these crafts. Included are math- and science-based “geek” knit and crocheted artworks, such as the groundbreaking coral-shaped hyperbolic planes constructed by mathematician Dainia Taimina. Other pieces include knit or crocheted interpretations of a computer motherboard, a translation of binary code, a glow-in-the-dark jellyfish, an eyeball, a fish embryo, a virus, and a Sierpinski triangle (a fractal) shawl.
