Photo Gallery: College Theater Presents Rossum’s Universal Robots

Lafayette College Theater presented its production of R.U.R. Rossum’s Universal Robots last weekend in the Williams Center for the Arts.

Written in 1920 by Czech author Karel Capek, the play is an expressionistic journey into genetic engineering on a mass scale and predicted a mechanized world without emotions and without individual rights. It introduced the word “robot” to the world.

The play was directed by Michael O’Neill, associate professor of English and director of theater. The original score was written by mathematics and music graduate Patrick Kelley ’09. Check out a photo gallery from the production.

I was in that production in the old all men days. It bings back memories to read that it is being presented again.

As I recall, the last time the Lafayette College Little Theater presented this play, it was around 53 years ago, and was directed by Minot (Mike) Coombs, who was always scrambling for female acting talent in those old all-men days. It looks as though the Little Theater has more to work with nowadays.
