Softball player Gwen Turner ’12 (Danville, Va.) discusses her work with economic development, her role in the My Easton publication, and the importance of teamwork.
What do you enjoy about your majors?
Economics has always been a challenge, which I enjoy. I have really liked the upper-level electives, Economic Development, and my Economic Healthcare classes. My professors are always so helpful and I have formed great relationships with a couple of them. In government and law, I always enjoy learning about different countries and their political histories.
One class that every Lafayette student should try to take is…
…any art class. I took Sculpture during my first year here and really enjoyed it and I’m not a very artistic person. I also took an Ad and Promo Design class in the fall, and I have learned a lot. Art is very relaxing and you can push your limits with what you think you can do and what you can actually do.
What was your most unique academic experience at Lafayette?
My most unique academic experience would be working on the My Easton publication with the Division of Communications, Maddie Laskoski ’13, Spencer Rice ’14, and Elisabeth Wraase ’11. I learned more about Easton and the surrounding areas while knowing that I was passing along information to incoming and prospective students of things I wish I would have known coming into Lafayette. To know that we may have enhanced others’ experience here at Lafayette is very rewarding.
What goals has the softball team set for this season?
Our team motto is “me is less than we.” We are putting the team first. Of course our goal is to win a Patriot League Championship, one game at a time.
What are the best and worst parts about fall and preseason workouts?
The best part is being on the field again. We haven’t been on the field together since May and we get to build chemistry with the freshmen. The worst part? There is no worst part… we get to play softball again!
What reality show would you have the best chance of winning?
The Voice… just kidding. Ask Stacey Dorn ’12; we are great at karaoke together. In reality, probably something like The Amazing Race.
What song/band/album is most likely to be playing on your iPod?
Usually anything country—Jason Aldean or Zac Brown Band
What movie can you quote word-for-word?
I am terrible at quoting movies, but it would have to be Despicable Me.
Who is most famous person you have ever met?
Craig Kimbrel from the Atlanta Braves: I work for the Danville Braves and we get to hang out with some of the players that come through our level of the organization. He’s a great guy and a very talented player to watch. I have also met Tony Womack from the Arizona Diamondbacks and Ferrell Edmunds of the Miami Dolphins. Ferrell lives in my county and coaches football at my old high school.
Signature Dance Move: I’m just such a good dancer there are too many to name
Team-Given Nickname: People just try to say “Gwen” like I do
Favorite Cartoon Character: Eeyore
Words to Live By: “Be strong in the Lord and never give up hope.”
