Quarterback Andrew Shoop ’13 (Danville, Pa.) discusses exploring other cultures as an anthropology and sociology major, staying in shape during the off season, and the importance of leadership.
What do you enjoy most about your major?
I think what I enjoy most about my major is that I constantly get to learn about other cultures all over the world. It can really give me a true idea sometimes of how blessed we are to be where we are and doing what we’re doing.
One class that every Lafayette student should try to take is…
…any class with anthropology and sociology professor Howard Schneiderman. He’s not only an awesome guy, but his classes are interesting and insightful.
What was your most unique academic experience?
I would have to say the only class I was able to take with the late government and law professor John McCartney. He was one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met, and his class was truly a unique experience because I got an opportunity to see not only how much he knew, but how well he could transfer that information to his students.
Do you have any post-graduation plans?
As of now, my mind is set on this upcoming summer and fall. I’m still undecided on what it is exactly that I would like to pursue after graduation, so I’m simply trying to focus on my most immediate goals: summer classes and being prepared for the fall, both academically and athletically.
What leadership roles have you adopted as a co-captain?
It has me in the position where guys on the team look to me in situations where they need just about anything, whether it’s on or off the field. However, our team leadership doesn’t end with the three captains; we have a small, but very strong senior class who are all leaders in their own right, and that has a trickle-down effect all the way to the upcoming sophomore class. In my mind we have a ton of leaders on this team, which is necessary for a winning program. I think that as an entire team, we are closer and stronger than ever.
What is your favorite sport other than football?
Baseball: I’ve played basically since I could walk and would give just about anything (except football) for a chance to be on the diamond again.
What television show have you seen every episode of?
In all likelihood, I would have to say SportsCenter. It’s on my TV just about every time I turn it on.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Australia: I haven’t traveled much in my life but for some reason I’ve always wanted to go there.
Your Theme Song:
“Shoop” by Salt-N-Pepa… not really a theme song but it has my name in it, so I guess it works. Other than that, my favorite preparation song would have to be “Set it Off” by Lil Boosie.
Food You Can’t Live Without:
My mom’s cooking
Nothing too creative. Leopard fans helped out with the “Shoooooop” call which still resides within the team, and I also get called “Seven.” Other than that, if anyone is trying to get under my skin, they call me Andy, which has never been a personal favorite of mine.
Words to Live By:
“In the pursuit of your goals, your only easy day should be yesterday.”
