Photo Gallery: Student Ensembles Present Winter Concerts

The Music Department celebrated the holidays with winter concerts by its student ensembles. Students from any major can perform in a variety of ensembles including Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, Contemporary Music Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Marquis Consort, and Percussion Ensemble. These are images from a joint Percussion Ensemble and Concert Choir holiday performance.

  1. The Christmas Vespers was a well-loved concert begun by choral director John Raymond in the mid-twentieth century. The Graduates Alumni choir continued to perform the Vespers for many years after John Raymond passed. A few years ago, the Graduates decided to no longer perform the Vespers, and we are in the process of revitalizing the Alumni choir. Today, the Lafayette Music Department has grown to include nine different performing ensembles, each presenting concerts throughout the year, and filled with nearly 300 students. Our two choral ensembles, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, perform works throughout the ages, sacred and secular, representing the diversity of our students in varied experiences, ideas, languages, and faiths. Choral singing is a respected tradition at Lafayette College and we are proud to continue the tradition now and in the future. You can find out more about our choral program and students by visiting sites.lafayette.edu/choir.

  2. I gather that Christmas Vespers is now offensive and Winter Concert is the more “acceptable” terminology.
