Students got insight from an expert on the state of national cybersecurity when Kevin Mandia ’92, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the FireEye™ security software firm, visited campus last week.
Mandia became a national figure last year after his cybersecurity company, Mandiant, published a 60-page report revealing that a military unit in China’s People’s Liberation Army was responsible for numerous cyber attacks on American corporations, organizations, and government agencies. The revelation propelled Mandia and his company to the forefront of a national security firestorm, which led to FireEye™ merging with Mandiant in a deal worth more than $1 billion.
A computer science graduate, Mandia presented a talk on “The State of the Hack,” and was interviewed for an upcoming segment of Lafayette Lens, a student-run production created in partnership with WLVT Channel 39, the Lehigh Valley PBS affiliate. Every aspect of the half-hour show is produced by students in the Political Economy class taught by Mark Crain, Simon Professor of Political Economy and chair of policy studies. It airs on PBS at the end of each semester.
