Donovan Hayes ’12
“Engineering presents many challenges, and being able to face them in an environment with faculty who are supportive and classmates who are willing to tackle the obstacle together gets me excited about the next challenges I will face.”
Donovan Hayes ’12 has been involved with numerous student groups and projects, but he is most proud of his work with Engineers Without Borders in Honduras. He and a team of Lafayette students worked together with Honduran villagers to construct a 5,900-gallon water storage tank. They also created a five-kilometer pipeline to feed each house in the community. This clean drinking water made a significant difference because ever since Hurricane Mitch destroyed their small water-distribution system, the villagers had to hike to the river each day to gather drinking water, bathe, and wash clothes. Each family now enjoys clean, running water.
Donovan is also involved with Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP), which works to make Lafayette and the Easton community greener. For example, LEAP composts food waste from the dining hall and uses it in an organic garden, which yields produce served in the dining hall. This food loop is of great interest to Donovan because he is committed to protecting the world’s natural beauty.
