Limited to 16 students, each First-Year Seminar (FYS) focuses on a special topic, through which participants develop their reading, writing, in-class discussion, and oral presentation skills. FYS also provides an introduction to library research and is affiliated with the College Writing Program, which supports students throughout their college careers.
With almost 40 seminar topics, many First-Year Seminar leaders collaborate in developing co-curricular activities. These may include sponsoring a campus lecture or attending a live performance at the Williams Center for the Arts. In addition to campus events, many instructors take students on an educational road trip.
