Passing between disciplines and across different groups on campus has broadened my perspective, allowing a better view of and richer discussions about the issues we all grapple with. I was able to partner with Engineers Without Borders through my work in Alternative School Break Club to build water systems in Honduras. I was able to do an independent study and an internship with Professor Kerns in the art department even though I am a philosophy major. I was in the College Theater’s production of Urinetown, The Musical even though I have limited experience in the performing arts. I am able to be part of the Association of Black Collegians even though I check the “Caucasian” box on every standardized test.
As a student, I was always encouraged to explore, to take risks, and to use what I learned to help others along in this process. I saw first-hand how eager faculty and administrators were to facilitate the learning process. My time here has given me a better understanding of how to begin to make social change, even if just on a small scale.
Sarah Belliotti '09 received the Unsung Hero Award, given annually at the Aaron O. Hoff Awards Ceremony, a celebration of dedication and service to the College community. The award honors students who have worked without concern for personal reward, have been loyal and dedicated, and have not been recognized for their efforts. Belliotti, of Buffalo, N.Y., is a philosophy major.
