Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships

Decisions on our academic scholarships have been made and congratulatory letters to the recipients were mailed on March 11. The competition was incredibly keen and the task of selecting these scholars was both rewarding and difficult. We applaud the scholarship recipients for their outstanding performance and hope they choose to come to Lafayette!

Academic Scholarships

Lafayette provides special educational and scholarship opportunities to approximately 15 percent of the students in each entering class who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual curiosity. All applicants, including early decision candidates, are considered for these prestigious awards. Scholars are selected by a committee based on their credentials and overall strength of the applicant pool. Marquis Scholarships are $16,000 per year and Trustee Scholarships are $8,000 per year. Recipients are also entitled to receive additional grant-to-need if they demonstrate financial need beyond the scholarship levels and meet the filing deadlines. A cumulative grade point average of 3.00 is required to retain the scholarship.

Who Qualifies?
Lafayette seeks students who have demonstrated intellectual curiosity in addition to their superior academic achievement. Curriculum, grades, rank in graduating class, and scores on standardized tests are all considered. Furthermore, the College looks for students engaged in independent, creative scholarship who have demonstrated significant accomplishments through involvement in school and community.

Scholarship recipients typically have the following profile: top 3 percent or better of their graduating class in the most demanding curriculum available, with SAT at or above 1400 (critical reading and math). Characteristics vary slightly from year to year, depending upon the strength of the College’s applicant pool.

All students who apply to Lafayette are considered for the program, based on the above criteria, though the program is limited to U.S. citizens and/or permanent residents. The scholarship is renewed each year at Lafayette provided the student maintains a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00. Students who are also requesting need-based financial aid must file the CSS Profile and other documents by the deadlines.

First-year students selected for an academic scholarship receive an official letter of notification in March.

Interim Study Abroad
The academic calendar consists of two 15-week terms, separated by a month-long break called interim that begins in late December and lasts through most of January. Lafayette offers a wide variety of special, intensive courses on campus and abroad during the January interim session and in May. Last year, nearly 160 students took nine courses on four continents.

As a benefit of the Marquis Scholars’ program, the College funds the program fee for one faculty-led, interim-abroad course for each Marquis Scholar.

Athletic Scholarships
Lafayette offers athletic scholarships in four sports: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, and women’s field hockey. Recipients are selected based on athletic talent as well as the ability to meet Lafayette’s rigorous academic standards. Compliance with NCAA regulations and continued participation in the sport are required.

Military Scholarships
Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships are available for the full cost of tuition and fees plus a book allowance and a stipend. These are awarded on merit and require a military obligation. Four-year and three-year advance designee scholarships are awarded to entering first-year students twice a year. Students who apply by July 15 before their senior year will be notified in November. Those who apply by Dec. 1 should be notified by March. Applications may be obtained by calling 1-800-750-7682, or www.armyrotc.com.

Two- and three-year scholarships are also awarded to students already enrolled at Lafayette. For more information on the military science program, call (610) 758-3275.
