Types of Financial Aid

TYPE ELIGIBILITY VALUE COMMENT
Academic Scholarships First-year, full-time students who have demonstrated academic excellence. Selection is based on high school grades, rigor of program, SAT scores, rank in class, and evidence of independent scholarship and personal initiative. Marquis $16,000 each year plus program fee for one faculty-led interim abroad course. Trustee $8,000 each year; calculated need exceeding value of either scholarship met with full grant award. Renewable each year as long as student maintains a 3.00 cumulative grade point average.
Lafayette College Grants Full-time students who demonstrate need under institutional methodology. Grants are based on a student’s need and are supplemented by loans and/or campus employment. Students must make satisfactory academic progress and must re-apply each year by the specified deadlines. New applicants will be considered based on available funds and G.P.A. comparable with the all-college average.
Athletic Scholarships Selection is based on athletic talent and ability to meet Lafayette’s rigorous academic standards. Available in men’s and women’s basketball, women’s field hockey, and men’s soccer. Full scholarship is up to value of tuition, fees, room, board, and books. Partial scholarships are also awarded. Compliance with NCAA regulations and continued participation in the sport are required.
Federal Pell Grants Any matriculated undergraduate
enrolled at least half-time without prior bachelor’s degree. Award based on federal
methodology.

Federal SEOG Grants Full-time students who
demonstrate need. Pell-eligible students receiving College
aid have priority.

Federal Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG)

Federal National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grants (SMART)
Full-time students who are U.S. citizens and Pell-eligible. ACG recipients must have completed an approved competitive high school curriculum. SMART grant recipients must be enrolled in certain science, math, or foreign language majors. ACG $750 for first year; $1,300 second year; SMART $4,000. Must maintain a minimum 3.00 grade point average each semester.
State Grant Programs Available to undergraduate
students from Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia. Award based on federal methodology and state guidelines.
Varies according to state criteria. Students from these states who apply for Lafayette College aid are required to apply for state grants.
Federal Perkins Loan Full-time students who demonstrate need. Varies according to unmet financial need and available funds. Repayment begins nine months after student graduates from Lafayette or from graduate school, or completes military service. 5% fixed interest rate in repayment.
Federal Stafford Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized) Any matriculated undergraduate enrolled at least half-time. Subsidy is based on federal methodology. $3,500 maximum for first-year, $4,500 for sophomores, $5,500 for juniors and seniors. 6.8% fixed interest rate, repayment deferred until six months after graduation; Subsidized—no interest accrues until six months after graduation. Unsubsidized—borrower responsible for accrued interest, which can be capitalized at borrower’s request.
Plus Loans Parents of undergraduates enrolled at least half-time. Parent borrower must be a U.S. citizen. Certification form required of all borrowers who do not submit a FAFSA. Credit review by lender. Up to the cost of education minus all other financial aid. Fixed interest rate of 8.5%; repayment begins within 60 days after disbursement of funds.
Work Study Students who demonstrate need under federal methodology. Payable monthly at a minimum hourly rate of $7.15. On-campus referrals include the library, dining services, academic departments, administrative offices, and off campus in the “America Reads” program.
