ETHICAL STUDIES
George Panichas, associate professor and head of philosophy, coordinator

Requirements for the minor: The interdisciplinary minor in Ethical Studies is designed to provide students with a foundation in ethical theory, an understanding of the application of ethical theory to specific contemporary problems, and an appreciation of the social and institutional contexts in which these problems arise. Further, by requiring independent work in the form of either an independent studies course or a faculty-directed internship, the minor emphasizes the importance of direct individual engagement in matters of vital interest and human dignity.

The minor consists of at least six approved courses beginning with Philosophy 105. Electives may be selected from two content areas: (1) Applied Ethics, (2) Ethical Traditions and Societal Contexts. At least one course must be chosen from each content area. Students are also required to take either Interdisciplinary Studies 380, 381 or 390, 391.

1) Applied Ethics

  • Philosophy 102: Basic Social Questions
  • Philosophy 107: Business Ethics
  • Philosophy 322: Philosophy of Law
  • Religion 283: Topics in Religious Ethics

2) Ethical Traditions and Societal Contexts

  • Anthropology & Sociology 235: Business and Society
  • Computer Science 200: Computers and Society
  • Engineering Science 225: Engineering Professionalism and Ethics
  • Government & Law 213: Law and Society
  • Religion 102: Contemporary Religious Issues
  • Religion 203: Religious Ethics
  • Interdisciplinary Studies 222: Technology, Values, and Society
Other courses may be taken with approval from the coordinator. In addition, existing internships and independent studies currently within various departments could count toward fulfilling the requirements of the minor.
