A trip to Prague helped Lori Weaver ’06, a Trustee Scholarship recipient, research the 1993 dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia for her honors thesis.

“I asked whether the ‘velvet divorce’ was inevitable and why it happened in such a peaceful manner,” says Weaver, a double major in history and government & law, who is being advised by Ilan Peleg, Dana Professor of Government and Law.

“Being in Prague and speaking to people who had not only lived through the split but [knew] what was going on was a wonderful experience,” says Weaver, adding the biggest reasons for the split were ethnic and religious differences. “These are things that are happening all around the world, so there are lots of lessons to be learned.”

Co-founder of the campus chapter of the Save Darfur campaign, Weaver is also president of College Democrats, captain of the mock trial team, a prison tutor, reporter for The Lafayette, and member of the history club.
