Prof James Campbell, U. Memphis: Ramsey Theory of the Integers
Ramsey Theory can be loosely described as stating: Given a finite partition of some structure, there exist highly-organized sub-structures within a single partition element.

We will focus on van der Waerden's Theorem, which says that given any finite partition of the natural numbers, a single partition element will contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions (pretty cool, eh?). The original proof of this result (1927) was, not surprisingly, combinatorial. The interesting thing for us is that in recent years (say, the last 30), approaches to this theorem, and generalizations thereof, have evolved using dynamical systems.

We'll give a description of one of these methods, due to H. Furstenberg and B. Weiss, and attempt to describe the enormous box of possibilities (some of which have come to fruition) it opened.
