Justin Fallon: Autism and Fragile X Syndrome: Meeting at the Synapse
Autism (or Autism Spectrum Disorders; ASD) affect 1:150 children. The cause of ASD is poorly understood, but it undoubtedly has a strong but complex genetic component coupled with environmental input. Fragile X syndrome is the most common form of mental retardation and the most prevalent single gene cause of autism. Recent advances in genetics and neurobiology have revealed that abnormalities in synaptic plasticity may be a common feature of both Fragile X and autism. In this talk we will focus on new findings implicating the presynaptic apparatus in Fragile X and discuss their potential implications for understanding the brain deficits underlying autism.
Justin Fallon is a Professor of Neuroscience at Brown University. Oechsle 224
