Discussion of Gerald Graff's "Clueless in Academe" sponsored by the Teaching & Learning Committee
The Teaching and Learning Committee invites faculty to participate in a series of discussions based on Gerald Graff's book "Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind"(Yale, 2003). Graff combines recent research and provocative arguments relating to the compartmentalization of academic disciplines, the difficulty of academic discourse, and obstacles to teaching argument and critical thinking in higher education--as well as a few modest proposals for addressing these issues.
Books are available free at the Dean of the College's office for faculty interested in joining some or all of the discussions. The first discussion will take place in Gilbert's Annex at 4:10pm on Tuesday, October 14; we will discuss Part I, which deals with compartmentalization and academic culture. Please contact Chris Phillips (phillipc@lafayette.edu) or Rebecca Metzger (metzgerr@lafayette.edu) with any questions. Gilbert's Annex

The Price of Liberty
Attorney Michael Hausfeld has litigated on behalf of persons denied civil rights during the holocaust, apartheid in South Africa and during governmental restructuring in eastern Europe. He describes the content of his lecture as follows: The lecture will discuss the concepts of liberty, the viewpoint of a fundamental, universal legal right. We will explore the origins of that concept and its implications. It will be grounded in specific examples of abuses around the world – such as Tulsa, Oklahoma, Iraq, Japan, Europe, Indonesia and South Africa. The lecture will connect abuse to the principal and emphasize the individuality as well as the collective nature of the abuse. The conclusion will attempt to state a model for the future.

Getting Justice in Health and Health Care
NORMAN DANIELS, Mary B. Saltonstall, Professor of Population Ethics and Professor of Ethics and Population Health Harvard School of Public Health
The United States is the only wealthy country that lacks universal access to health care and many Americans believe health care reform is clearly in order. Crucial values issues underlie all aspects of health care reform. These values are key to answering fundamental questions underlying reform, such as: Is unequal access to care unjust, or is it an acceptable consequence of relying on private insurance? Who is obliged to pay for care, and how should the costs be distributed? What kinds of care are owed to people? Who has the moral authority to make such decisions? What is the role of individual choice? For further information contact George Panichas, ext. 5165 Kirby Law 104
