"The Mechanics of Flatland: from molecules to membranes (and back)"
James K. Ferri, Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering The 19th century novel, Flatland, describes the operations of a two-dimensional world, in which the protagonist becomes aware of the existence of higher dimensional worlds and their relationship to his own. Two-dimensional surfaces today play an important role in nanotechnology, a field with implications for tissue engineering, biotechnology, and medicine. This talk will expand on the theme of dimensionality in the context of nanotechnology materials. We describe experimental approaches and accompanying theoretical frameworks developed in our research to measure intrinsic properties (strength, permeability) of nanostructured surface materials. We conclude with a discussion of the impact that Flatland will have on modern life. 104 Kirby Hall of Civil Rights

Estrogens, Environment, Evolution and Health: Use-Inspired Research in Action
Life Science Seminar Series:
John McLachlan, Director of Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research Human and ecosystem health are related to environmental influences. We have sought common mechanisms that can explain environmental contributions to the health of diverse species. We propose that a common mechanism is the interaction of environmental signaling molecules with cellular events that are similar across multiple species and, perhaps, whole ecosystems. Our attention has focused on those compounds in the environment that mimic the female sex hormone, estrogen. Since hurricane Katrina we have tried to bring this thinking to parts of the restoration of communities in New Orleans. The approach to science in which community needs play a role in basic research has been called “use-inspired basic research” (Donald Stokes, Pasteur’s Quadrant, 1997). Hugel 103

Science of Success
The purpose of this 50-minute workshop is to assist high performing students as well as struggling students to maximize their efforts and achieve greater success in the classroom. Many students spend significant amounts of time studying and yet their efforts may yield less than optimal results. This workshop will present several best practices that can enhance motivation, memory, and concentration. Last year more than half of the first-year class attended voluntarily. Of those who attended, approximately 94% stated they would be likely to use the information.
There is no RSVP needed. It is my sincere hope that, after participating in this session, students will achieve more, both in and out of the classroom, and their levels of engagement will be heightened. Oechsle 224
