From the Studio is a joint exhibition at Lafayette's Williams Center and Grossman Galleries.

Noreum Machi

This intrepid troupe from Korea performs a modernized staged adaptation of p’ungmul nori, a ritualistic celebratory event with origins in shamanism, originally performed by rice farmers and professional musicians at harvest festivals in the Korean countryside. As court music died out with the end of dynastic rule in the early 20th century, p’ungmul nori was maintained in the villages and rural areas. In recent years, skilled performers have returned this music and costumed dance to the prominence of urban performance halls, thrilling audiences in Asia and throughout the world. Noreum Machi’s colorful program includes spectacular percussion dialogues, shamanic chants, and acrobatic dances. P’ungmul nori represents the soul of Korea.

Each year Touba's population swells from one million to more than four million, when members of the Mouride brotherhood, a Sufi group founded by Cheikh Amadou Bamba, pour into the city for the annual Magal. The Magal is a time of great joy for all who participate and poetry, song, and ecstatic moments have been captured by Katzenstein's remarkable photographs. Accompanying him will be Cheikh Fara Gaye, a Mouride disciple from Senegal, who is now living in Philadelphia and who was Katzenstein's guide and partner in the photography project.

First performed off-Broadway in 1995, this most controversial of David Mamet’s plays has lost none of its power to provoke fierce debates about sexual harassment and gender politics. A student’s accusation of her male professor’s sexual impropriety triggers what The New York Times described as “hand-to-hand combat that amounts to a primal struggle for power.”

The Mark Taper Forum’s recent smash revival starring Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles prompted The Los Angeles Times to conclude, “You can’t argue with a play that retains the power to get theatergoers arguing with each other as they head home.” Directed by Elizabeth Witmer ’10.

Paquito D'Rivera

This Cuban-born musical pioneer has garnered every major award in jazz, including the NEA Jazz Masters Award and the National Medal of Arts (both in 2005), numerous Grammies, and an astonishing series of collaborations with many of the greatest figures in music. His breakout partnerships with Dizzy Gillespie and the original “United Nations” bands in the 1980s solidified the Afro-Cuban pulse of musical spirit that continues to undergird mainstream American jazz. Following guest appearances at Lafayette with the Mario Bauza Orchestra (1998) and the Turtle Island String Quartet (2002), D’Rivera returns with his Quintet (first heard at Lafayette in 1992), featuring Diego Urcola on trumpet, Alex Brown on piano, Oscar Stagnaro on bass, and Mark Walker on drums.
