Alcohol Policy

Effective July 1, 2005, the College will enforce the following restrictions when serving alcohol on College property or at College sponsored events. Clients must schedule all events through the Office of Scheduling & Events Planning at extension 5077.

First, employees, students, and agents of the College must fully comply with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regarding the possession and consumption of alcohol. Pennsylvania law prohibits: furnishing or providing alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 or to anyone visibly intoxicated; anyone under the age of 21 from possessing or consuming alcoholic beverages under any circumstances; and importing alcoholic beverages from neighboring states such as New Jersey. In addition, the following College requirements apply:

  1. All alcoholic beverages must be served by a College approved TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) certified bartender or wait staff member who will be provided through Lafayette College Dining Services. Since alcoholic beverages will not be served to any person younger than twenty-one (21) years of age, please advise your attendees that they may be asked to produce appropriate identification.
  2. When serving wine with dinner, no carafes, decanters, or wine bottles are permitted on the table. The wait staff will serve wine during dinner. No alcoholic beverages will be dispensed from kegs, fountains, or barrels.
  3. All alcoholic beverages for events held at the College must be purchased by Wood/Sodexho designates using College funds.
  4. Alternative non-alcoholic beverages must be available and hors d'oeuvres or other food must be served at the event.
  5. While alcoholic beverages may be served throughout the event, Lafayette College authorizes its food service provider, The Wood Company (a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of Sodexho Operations LLC) to refuse service to individuals suspected of intoxication and to terminate all alcohol service if needed.
  6. If determined by the Manager of Scheduling & Events Planning, the event may require a security presence resulting in an additional charge.
  7. Open bar service shall not exceed a total of four (4) hours and service will be terminated one-half (1ǘ) hour before the scheduled end of the event.
  8. No alcoholic beverages may be sold to guests nor may the cost of such beverages be included in the cost of tickets purchased by or donations made by attendees.
  9. The Client is responsible for the conduct of the event's guests. A representative of the Client must be present for the duration of the event for resolution of issues that may arise.
  10. Alcohol may not be kept on campus by anyone other than Wood/Sodexho designates.
Costs:
  1. The bartender must be paid for a minimum of three (3) hours for each event to allow for set up and break down.
  2. For events exceeding one hour, Client will be charged for bartender service hours plus an additional two (2) hours per bartender for set-up before the event and clean-up after the event. These hours include the labor cost of trips to a Pennsylvania Liquor Store to purchase the alcohol.
  3. The current rate for bartenders at College events is $35.00 per hour.
However, to address concerns that the additional minimum cost to each event for bartenders would practically preclude the use of alcohol at smaller functions or for departments with small budgets, the College will assume the cost for bartender services at the following times on the first floor of the Pfenning Alumni Center only.
  • Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
