Employee Insurance Coverages
I General Liability Coverage
Coverage is provided for: all trustees, officers, employees, volunteers or students (of supervised intern programs) designated by Lafayette College while such persons are acting within the scope of their respective capacities. The total amount of coverage is $26,000,000 with $1,000,000 supplied by the primary liability policy and $25,000,000 supplied by an excess liability policy.
II Property Coverage
While employees of Lafayette are provided with coverage for their personal effects (excluding vehicles), losses are subject to a $10,000 deductible per claim and a $25,000 limit per building. THIS COVERAGE DOES NOT APPLY IF THE LOSS IS COVERED BY OTHER INSURANCE SUCH AS HOMEOWNERS OR RENTERS INSURANCE.
III Automobile Coverage
(A) While operating a College vehicle:
Employees who anticipate operating College vehicles must complete a "Request to Operate College Vehicle" form (available on the Business Affairs web site) and deliver it, in person, to the Treasurer's Office. The Treasurer's Office will also make a copy of the employee's driver's license when the form is delivered. Using this information, the College may perform Department of Motor Vehicle check on the employee's driving record. If needed, the Transportation Policy on the Business Affairs web site provides instructions for reserving Motor Pool vehicles. While operating College vehicles, employees are provided with $1,000,000 in liability insurance.
(B) While operating a personal vehicle on College business:
The vehicle's insurance provides payment for any damages to the employee's vehicle. The employee's insurance also provides the primary liability coverage for the accident. The College's policy will provide excess liability coverage to the extent of the College policy's limits ($1,000,000).
(C) While operating a rental vehicle on College business:
It is College policy to obtain rental vehicles through the Motor Pool Office and to obtain automobile insurance through the rental agency when the vehicle is rented. It is also policy to pay an additional per day charge to the rental agency to waive any deductible amount. When renting a vehicle using the American Express Corporate Card please follow the instructions provided in the Vehicle Rentals document posted to the Business Affairs Policies page.
The above automobile coverage is extended to students operating vehicles on College business as follows:

This form must be signed by the a department or program head. The Treasurer's Office will make a copy of the student's driver's license when the form is delivered. Using this information, the College may perform Department of Motor Vehicle check on the student's driving record. . If needed, the Transportation Policy on the Business Affairs web site provides instructions for reserving Motor Pool vehicles and outside rentals. Students are required to obtain written verification from a faculty member or administrator that the trip is for College business.
(B) (B) Using student vehicles for College business is discouraged. The vehicle's insurance provides payment for any damages to the student's vehicle. The student's insurance also provides the liability coverage for the accident.
IV Business & Travel Coverage
(A) Twenty-four hour coverage of $250,000 per claim with a $1,000,000 per accident limit for death and dismemberment is provided for all full time employees while traveling on business. This coverage excludes:
(1) Commuting between home and place of work
(2) Personal deviations while on a business trip
(3) Trips, which exceed 60 days in length
(4) Trips where the employee is acting as a pilot or member of an aircraft crew
(B)Since immediate payment is generally required when traveling abroad, emergency medical treatments administered in a foreign country will be paid immediately by the College and the employee will reimburse the College when the bills have been paid by their medical insurance company.
V International Travel Coverage
Employees travelling abroad on College business are also provided with automobile, liability and medical evacuation coverage. By contacting the Treasurer's Office before departure, employees will be provided with the necessary identification cards for access to the insurance company's Executive Assistance Program. This program provides 24-hour service to employees in need of emergency assistance.
