A1. Academic Degrees

a1.1. In text, write out degrees in the following manner: bachelor's degree (bachelor's in anthropology), master's degree, doctorate. Use abbreviations only after a full name, and only when absolutely necessary to avoid confusion among several degreeholders. Do not capitalize when written in full. At Lafayette, use A.B. rather than B.A. for bachelor of arts degree; B.S. for bachelor of science. Plural form: A.B.'s; B.S.'s. The Bachelor of Arts in Engineering degree should be used with caps only in the department brochure and the College Catalog; otherwise, use A.B. engineering degree. For a list of abbreviations for degrees, see C8.6.
