Grammar and Specific Lafayette Usage Guide

A5. Numbers and Numerals

a5.1. Numbers from zero to nine should be spelled out in any text. Numbers from 10 on up should appear as numerals. The same applies to the ordinal use of those numbers (first, 12th).

a5.2. However, numbers referring to the same category in the same sentence should all be numerals or all spelled out. For example: In the past ten years, a 50-story building was constructed between a 3-story house and a 4-story office complex.

a5.3. Numerals are acceptable when used from 0 to 9 or 1st to 9th in the following cases: political or military designations (1st Ward; 3rd Regiment), ratios (outnumbered 3-1), clothing sizes, speeds, and appropriate page, chapter, or scene designations.

a5.4. Numbers greater than 10 used at the beginning of a sentence should be spelled out. (Ninety-six angels danced on the head of a pin.) Avoid this when possible.

a5.5. All percentages require numerals, except at the beginning of a sentence. (According to the poll, only 6 percent of Easton residents wanted Lafayette to stay in town.) N.B. Always spell out the word percent.

a5.6 Use numerals to indicate ages (as per AP style). For example: The boy is 4 years old. The 4-year-old boy is playing ball. The 24-year-old graduate is moving to Florida. Sam Jones, 42, played football when he was in high school. Avoid constructions in which the class year and an age would fall together in a sentence. For example: Susan Kelly '84, 36, of Homewood, Fla., is now a physician.

a5.7. Use numerals when referring to a hit song: "Hey Baby" was No. 2 for six weeks in 1965.

a5.8 Telephone numbers. Use parentheses for area code and no hyphen between area code and number. For example: (610) 250-5100. Use hyphens for toll-free numbers. For example: 1-800-556-1122, 1-800-LAFAYET

a5.8 Converting Temperatures and Metric to Standard Measure:
1km=.62 mi    1 mi=1.609 km
1m=39.37 inches     1 yard=0.9144 m
1 mi=1,760 yards     1 km=approx. 1.243 miles
See p. 733 and p. 1341 in Webster's for charts.)
