B4. Dashes

b4.1. Use dashes to set off a phrase in which individual elements are separated by commas: The major suspects—Leo, Jacoby, Renault, Bobby—were hauled in for a lineup.

b4.2. Use dashes to mark a sudden shift of thought or an inordinately long pause: She thought she had it all figured out—but she was 100 percent wrong.
