ProgramsEPI organizes international exchanges in the visual arts with diverse countries including Japan, Australia, England, Germany, Costa Rica, and Mexico. These visits have introduced a broad range of artists and contemporary printmaking trends to members of the Lafayette College community and to the general public. EPI has curated numerous traveling exhibitions including Artists and the Art of the Book—a highly successful touring exhibition of artist’s books that included more than 100 books by over 80 different artists and Here & There Now, an exhibition of five U.S. artists and five Japanese artists which traveled to numerous locations here in the US and abroad. Workshops for artists, school groups, Elderhostel groups, and children in the community are offered. The largest event to date was the “Worlds Longest Print” project that brought together Lafayette students, local children, and artists to design and print a 2,500 foot-long print that circled the Lafayette campus. Master Artist/Master Printmaker Project
The Master Artist/Master Printmaker Project involved the creation of new works by internationally renowned master artists and master printmakers. This innovative project involved Lafayette students at all levels and local artists as printer assistants. This project was funded, in part, by The Pittsburgh Foundation. The two-year project paired master artists with master printmakers to experiment with digital and traditional printmaking media to produce a limited edition of prints. Artists involved were Faith Ringgold, Richard Anuszkiewicz, David C. Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Grace Hartigan, Bodo Korsig, Emma Amos, and Kay Walkingstick. Printmakers were John Phillips of the London Print Studio, Robert Beckman and Ian Short of the Artists Image Resource (AIR) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Curlee Raven Holton, Australian printmaker Wayne Crothers working at Ogawa Studio in Japan, Jean Paul Russell of Durham Press, Pennsylvania, John Dowell of Philadelphia, and Allan Edmunds of the Brandywine Workshop also in Philadelphia. The creative process was documented through photography, exhibitions, and publications. Visiting ArtistsArtists are invited to be in residence to collaborate with the printmakers. Materials, housing, student and staff support, transportation, and a per diem are provided. Artists must be
available to work with classes. There are two specific programs under which artists are invited: Tague/Blackburn Emerging Artist in Residence is intended for artists who have completed their education and have begun to establish a career with critical review. At the conclusion of the residency, the artist will receive a certificate of completion. Artists wishing to apply for consideration must complete the application process. Artist/Scholar Residency Established artists will have time to perform research for publications or to research new and innovative techniques in printmaking that will then be documented by EPI. From time to time, other artists are also in residence, either by invitation or contract. Student Apprentices/Professional PracticesEPI encourages creative experimentation and collaboration among artists and students. Students are working side by side with some of today’s most accomplished printmakers and artists–learning and creating unique and important works of art. Students have traveled to artist’s studios and other institutions involved with the project and have developed important professional relationships. EPI’s Professional Practices workshops are operated during the fall and spring semesters to enhance and compliment students who are interested all areas of the fine arts and graphic arts professions. The workshops are designed to develop an appreciation for the traditions and practices of professionals working in these areas. This is accomplished by organizing workshops in related areas of study under the direction of professionals with a view toward advanced study and professional mentorship. Students work on projects in the following areas:
