Lafayette Community Thrives Across the Pond
Members of the Alumni Association's London chapter hosted Qiong Wu ’09 (Shanghai, China) for a weeklong externship. Jane Wiest ’87 hosted him for his stay, and he had externship experiences with He Shen ’97, Lloyds TSB; Vijay Rajguru ’84, GoldenTree Asset Management; and Richard Landsberger S’77, Fairfield Greenwich Group. Lafayette President Dan Weiss and his wife, Sandra, will visit the chapter at a dinner and reception. The chapter plans to hold an event at the beginning of July for the 23 students in the summer interim course Ethical and Social Issues in Healthcare in the U.K. Peter M. Sullivan ’82 is coordinating a Lafayette-Lehigh football telecast party in London this fall.

Online Registration Available for Alumni Events
Signing up for alumni events is easier than ever, thanks to the registration feature within the events calendar of the Alumni Online Community. Each calendar listing provides event information and a link to the names of those who have registered online. Secure online payment with a credit card is available for events with fees. In conjunction with this, the Office of Alumni Affairs is transitioning from email to paper invitations for many events, including chapter activities, Homecoming, and the Lafayette-Lehigh football telecast parties. This makes starting the RSVP process as easy as clicking on a link within the email. It also supports Lafayette’s initiative to become a more environmentally friendly campus by reducing the amount of paper used for invitations.

Chi Phi Alumni Will Enjoy Golf Outing during Reunion Weekend
Stephen H. Konya ’96 is Reunion chair for his class as well as the organizer of the golf outing being held at this year’s Reunion for his fraternity, Chi Phi. Last year’s Chi Phi “mini-reunion,” which included a golf outing and a barbeque at the group’s old house, is his fondest Reunion memory. According to Konya, around 100 people attended and organizers received a lot of positive feedback. "We had alumni ranging from the Class of 1955 through 2006 and although the age differences spanned many years, the bonds of Chi Phi and Lafayette College were felt by all," he says. Konya encourages everyone to attend Reunion because there is something for everyone, including class dinners, lectures, tours of campus, and games for children.

Delta Tau Delta Alumni Will Renew Old Friendships at Reunion
Members of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity will return to campus during the weekend of June 6-8 for a golf outing and more. Joseph P. McNulty ’81 has served as chair for the Delta Tau Delta Golf Reunion for the past two years. “The golf outing last year was fantastic," he says. "We had a great turnout for both the outing and the Delt picnic held in front of the old Delt house the following day. There were Delt brothers at the picnic that spanned 50 years and it seemed that there was a renewed will to keep the Delt spirit alive." This year’s golf outing will take place Friday, June 6, at The Club at Morgan Hill in nearby Williams Township.

Track & Field and Cross Country Alumni Will Reunite during Reunion Weekend
Past members of the track & field and cross country teams will get together during Reunion Weekend. “I had a great time at Lafayette and I wanted to reunite with members of the track team from when I was an undergrad,” says organizer Gregory D. Eggert ’79. A picnic will be held noon-4 p.m. Saturday, and members of the track & field and cross country teams will host a ceremony at the Metzger Athletic Complex to dedicate the teams’ new locker rooms. Stanley Ciemniecki ’75 has donated funds to endow the men’s locker room in the name of former coach William Donohue. Track & field and cross country alumni will have the opportunity to sponsor lockers by making a donation; each donor’s name will be on a plaque on a locker.

Marquis Society Adjusts Giving Levels

Lafayette's Marquis Society, which welcomed 52 members when it began in 1967 as the President's Committee, has experienced dramatic growth in both membership and impact. In 2006-07 a record 1,529 alumni, parents, and friends enrolled and contributed more than $13 million to the College. In response to this impressive growth, several changes in recognition levels within the Society will take effect July 1, 2008. Individuals whose annual gifts total at least $1,000 will continue to qualify for Marquis Society membership. However, a new level, the Marquis Founders Club, will recognize donors who contribute between $1,826 and $4,999. (The $1,826 figure reflects the year in which the College was chartered.)

Kirby House Alumni Will Relive Good Times at Reunion
Kirby House former president Jim Doughty '90 hopes the group’s gathering during this year’s Reunion Weekend (June 6-8) will capture the spirit of its heyday. "It's personal," he says. "It’s for people who have enjoyed this experience together and keep in touch, but don’t have many opportunities to partially recreate that experience.” During his time at Lafayette, Kirby House was the only non-Greek social living group on campus. It operated like a fraternity but was not affiliated with a national organization, had no pledging, and in the early ’90s voted to accept women as members. The building's marble foyer, large living room, leather furniture, library, barroom, kitchen, and dining room were part of the appeal of living there.

Networking Night in NYC: Students Connect with Alumni

It's our proximity advantage. Hop a quick bus from campus to Manhattan and you're in.the media and communications capital of the world, mingling with alumni who work in the career fields you're targeting. On one of the College's "networking nights" in New York City, dozens of students recently made connections with alumni working at ABC News, NBC’s Today Show, MTV Networks, Discovery Communications, Highline Media, Better Homes & Gardens, Columbia Artists Management, Advertising.com, M&C Saatchi Sport and Entertainment, numerous PR firms, and other companies. Lafayette's proximity to New York City's professional, educational, and cultural resources is “a very attractive feature,” says Karen Ruggles ’08 (Easton, Pa.).

Sports Psychologist Will Discuss Impact of Mind on Performance at CLW Conference

Diane Shaw Will Tell Story of Marquis de Lafayette’s Wife at CLW Conference
College Archivist Diane Windham Shaw will tell the story of the heroic wife of the Marquis de Lafayette at the April 4-5 Council of Lafayette Women Conference. "Lafayette's wife, Adrienne, is one of the most remarkable people in history," she says. "However, she is not well known because she often fell in the shadow of Lafayette." Shaw says that Adrienne showed extreme courage and tenacity when faced with the threat of being beheaded after both her mother and grandmother had met the same fate in France. "It's a love story of great warmth and great drama. It has all the elements of a wonderful tale,” she says. “Our women alums are so smart, so engaged, and so involved in the world today and I think they will find a lot of resonance in Adrienne’s story."
