Lee Sullivan '80 Has Published 23 Children’s Books
After the birth of her son, Lee Sullivan '80 decided to leave her fulltime job in construction management and stay at home. She tried her hand at writing. “I needed stimulation for my brain,” she says. “And I’ve always loved children's books.” Sullivan has published 23 titles under various imprints with Lerner, a school-library market publisher, under the name Lee Sullivan Hill. The latest is The Flyer Flew!: The Invention of the Airplane. “The Lafayette impact is pretty amazing,” she says. Sullivan believes her time at Lafayette definitely helped prepare her for her career experiences. "My A.B. engineering curriculum prepared me wonderfully for both construction management and writing, and encouraged my creativity."

Kathy Jankauskas ’82 Has Designs on Creativity
Kathy Jankauskas '82 got involved in volunteering for First Night Newtown (Pa.) through designing a web site, button, and poster for its New Year’s Eve celebration. "It is part of First Night International," she says. "You wear the button as your ticket to get into the event." She won a First Place Prism Award for Excellence in Design from First Night’s International team of designers for the web work. She was asked to do the poster, web, and button designing again last year and was also engaged for a related endeavor called AHA! (Art History and Adventure). “I have always loved art,” she says. "My two major loves in college were art and engineering. They are more related than people think and I’ve come across many people who are good at both."

Gary Stephenson ’86 Promoted to Senior VP at DPL

DPL has promoted electrical engineering graduate Gary Stephenson ’86 to senior vice president, power production. In his new position, he is responsible for the operation and management of DPL’s 3,750 megawatts of electric generation. He maintains responsibility for DPL’s commercial operations, which encompasses fuel procurement, wholesale sales, and unregulated retail sales. Stephenson joined DPL in 2004 as vice president of commercial operations. Previously, he was vice president of commercial operations for Intergen and vice president of portfolio management for PG&E National Energy Group. He has also held positions with General Electric and Northeast Utilities.

Ana Duarte McCarthy ’81 Promotes Diversity at Citigroup
As chief diversity officer for Citigroup, biology graduate Ana Duarte McCarthy ’81 is responsible for shaping the financial services company’s policy and practices on diversity. Her position focuses on management accountability, attracting talent, workforce development, and the work environment. The National Society of Hispanic MBAs named McCarthy the 2007 Ultimate Hispanic Executive, an honor recognizing professional achievement and strong commitment to service. "Twenty-five years ago, there were few people of minority background at Lafayette, and being 'one of few' had its challenges," says McCarthy. "It's good to see that the current administration has made diversity a top priority to support the future growth and sustainability of the College."

Dan Nickerson '86 Manages Agency's Support for NATO's Afghanistan Force
Dan Nickerson '86 is assigned to the NATO Consultation, Control, and Command Agency (NC3A), which is located along with NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The NC3A provides NATO with scientific, communications, intelligence, surveillance, and other support. As a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, Nickerson is assigned to NC3A’s Current Operations Team as a program manager, providing communications capability to NATO forces participating in the International Security Assistant Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. Since ISAF has been taking over the majority of the military and reconstruction mission in Afghanistan from the U.S. coalition, his job has been to run several projects to design, install, and operate communication systems.

Mike Sanchez '81 Named Site Manager of Major DuPont Facility
Electrical engineering graduate Mike Sanchez '81 recently became site manager of the Sabine River Works plant in Orange County, Texas. One of DuPont’s largest locations, it is home to 1,000 DuPont employees, nearly 600 contractors, and about 600 employees from another company working on-site. "The job of site manager is really one of making sure that the right systems, processes, resources, and daily executions are in place to support the business strategy," Sanchez explains. "The most rewarding part of my job is helping and mentoring people and watching them grow as they achieve the business objective. The buck stops with the site manager. You have tremendous responsibility in the way of facilities, but also you have a huge people investment."

Charlie Churchill '83 Fuses Centuries of Techniques to Paint Local Landscapes
Meadowlands Environment Center in New Jersey hosted a month-long exhibit of Meadowlandscapes by Charlie Churchill '83. The realist painter fuses several centuries of techniques to depict local landscapes including the New Jersey Turnpike, the Hackensack River, and the marshes of the Meadowlands. "I find a great deal of beauty in this unique landscape," he says. "It holds a great deal of emotional significance for me, and it offers a wonderful chance to deal with the atmospheric interplay between the river and the sky." He has participated in numerous group shows in New York City, winning the Edwin Gould Award from the National Arts Club and the Ridgewood Art Institute Award from the Salmagundi Club. He has executed numerous corporate commissions.

Peter Sullivan '82 Helps Countries Build Economies

Two and a half years in the Peace Corps in Mali, West Africa, convinced international affairs graduate Peter Sullivan ’82 that he had found the key to a sustainable economy. "I went over as a quasi-socialist and came back convinced that the success of an imbedded economy hinges on access to capital," he explains. In 2004, he became director of Citigroup’s new Public Sector Group. "In essence, I came back to where I started in Peace Corps," he says. "We are helping countries meet their social, economic, and political goals. The group is less motivated by profit and more by greater good." He is married to Andrea Josephson Sullivan '84, and works at CitiGroup with Ana Duarte McCarthy '81, chief diversity officer.

Angel Mendez '82 is "Bona Fide Star" in His Field
According to World Trade Magazine, electrical engineering graduate Angel Mendez '82 is "a bona fide star in the supply chain world." The publication recently featured him in "A Conversation with Cisco's Angel Mendez," Mendez is senior vice president of worldwide manufacturing at Cisco Systems Inc., leading a group of nearly 2,000 employees. Last August, World Tradeincluded him in its Fabulous Fifty Plus One, which calls attention to those "forging the future of world trade." Mendez, who came to Lafayette from Puerto Rico, previously was among 20 executives named "Corporate Elite" by Hispanic Business. In 2003, Business 2.0 magazine included him in its list of "Dream Team All-Star Executives Any Company Would Kill For."

Craig Rustici '86 Publishes Book on Legend of Pope Joan
In the 9th century, as the story goes, a woman disguised as a man ruled the Catholic church. Hofstra University professor Craig Rustici '86 was so intrigued by the tale that he made it the focus of his recently published book, The Afterlife of Pope Joan. "The legend of Pope Joan was not committed to writing until the 13th century," says the English graduate. "The book is about what happens after the story gets established. It looks at the various versions of the legend and the implications on social, political, and religious thought of each." Rustici was a McKelvy Scholar at Lafayette, and his most memorable times were with that group. "I am quite indebted to Lafayette," he says.

Harry Keefe '83 Will Raise Funds to Fight Crohn's Disease
For the third year, Harry Keefe '83 will participate in cycling events known as Get Your Guts in Gear to boost public awareness about Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and raise money for patient support, patient education, advocacy work, and research. He will cycle from LaGrange to Austin, Texas, in March; from Manhattan to Saratoga Springs in upstate New York in June; and around Whidbey Island and the Skagit Valley in northwestern Washington State in August. Collectively the nine days of cycling will amount to more than 650 miles or about 180,000 peddle strokes, according to Keefe, who feels ready for the challenge. "Participating in these events is important to me because my daughter has Crohn’s disease," he says.

Gaary Holran '88 Serves as VP at Large of Alumni Association Executive Committee

History graduate Pamela Gaary Holran '88 serves Lafayette as vice president at large of the Alumni Association Executive Committee and member of the Board of Trustees. After earning her law degree, she helped lead the Washington, D.C. alumni chapter. "We enjoyed planning events for the chapter and working with the College to create an alumni chapter that was responsive to the needs of the College and the local alumni," she says. She worked in wireless telecommunications law for eight years. After the birth of her second child, Holran left to spend more time with her children. "Lafayette has been a comforting, rewarding, and challenging part of my life," she says.

Maria LaReddola Takacs '89 is champion equestrian competitor

Maria LaReddola Takacs ’89 went from the rat race to the horse race. Well, not a race so much as a jump. Takacs is a champion equestrian jumper, participating in shows all over the country. A former principal at Morgan Stanley, Takas married in 2000 and retired from Wall Street in 2001, which freed her up to flourish in jumping. Last October she competed in the Washington International Horse Show, qualifying as one of the top 30 amateur riders in the country over age 35. There is another category of riders ages 18-35 and among all 60 amateur competitors, she was named grand champion. “I’m a full-time mom and finally really have the time and resources to compete and win. This is something I dreamed of as a kid,” she says.

Michael Kenny ’89 Heads Travel Company in Thailand

After five years of working in real estate, Michael Kenny ’89 decided it was time to see the world before settling down with a family and career. Now, 13 years later, he is still living and working in Thailand. Following travel in Europe that nearly depleted his funds, the economics and business graduate bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok and became a training manager at a five-star resort in Phuket, Thailand. He eventually founded Agoda Company, an independent online travel agency that specializes in securing the lowest discount hotel prices. Based in Singapore with operations in Bangkok and the Philippines, Agoda’s network includes 7,000 hotels in Asia and more than 33,000 worldwide.

Lemisch '88 Gives Students Insights into Work on Major Infrastructure Projects
Four-lane highways and massive bridges are the work place for people like Adam Lemisch '88, who keep traffic moving smoothly. The civil engineering graduate is a project manager for Perini Corporation's Civil Construction Division and part of the project management team for the $150 million structural repair of the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York. Lemisch, who credits the College with preparing him for the challenging work, has been a guest lecturer for the Construction Management course taught by David Veshosky, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering and chair of the A.B. engineering program. His case studies let students see first-hand how a project is managed and built.

Honors Add Up for Laura Bailey Culp ’82

Laura Bailey Culp ’82 has made a habit of earning honors. Last year, she received the Simonetti Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Akron College of Business Administration and was recognized at the International Group of Accounting Firms’ annual tax conference, where her presentation on tax planning was named second best at the event. She was named Woman Philanthropist of the Year in 2005 by The Women’s Initiative Council of the United Way of Summit County (Ohio) and Woman of Distinction for Community Volunteerism by the Girl Scouts of the Western Reserve Council in 1998. Culp is shareholder and director of taxation at Brockman, Coats, Gedelian & Co. in Akron, Ohio.

McCurdy '82 Uses Career Skills, Love of Lafayette to Benefit Students, Alumni
A partner with Kelley, Drye & Warren LLP in Stamford, Conn., Paul McCurdy ’82 serves as vice president for programs and president-elect of the Alumni Association, a member of Lafayette Leadership Council, class fund manager and agent for the Class of 1982, and an externship sponsor. "I've only missed two Homecomings since 1978," he says. "I love to see friends who are alumni and I love to see friends who are faculty. I’ve always been very proud of and very connected with the school." He adds, "I have tried to help various students [and alumni] by giving them advice and guidance about career paths into the law."
