Students Attend National Conference for Hunger and Homelessness Millie Barry ’10 and Julie Pollack ’11 attended the National Resolve to Fight Poverty Conference Nov. 5-7 at Loyola University in Chicago and came away with ideas to strengthen and reinvigorate the College’s efforts during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Nov. 14-20. The activities next week, which are organized by the Landis Community Outreach Center, will include students sleeping outside in a hut on the Quad, making and delivering sandwiches to homeless people in Philadelphia, fasting for 30 hours to feel hunger, collecting used clothing and canned goods, and answering trivia questions online to earn rice for hungry people in Third World countries.

Lauren George ’08 and Lauren Sites ’08 Give Back to the Community
For the last three years, Marquis Scholar Lauren George ’08 (Collegeville, Pa.), who is majoring in biology, and Lauren Sites ’08 (West Chester, Pa.), who is majoring in biochemistry, have played important roles in planning and coordinating the blood drives held on campus every semester by the Landis Community Outreach Center. George stressed the importance of donating blood. “Every day people in this country get into accidents and need blood transfusions. Without the constant donation of blood from healthy donors from places like the Lafayette community, most of whom have probably been affected in some way or another by blood donations, people in need would not have access to something as simple, yet vital, as blood.”

Students Will Share the Joy of Reading Children and teens from the Easton and Phillipsburg communities will participate in a variety of activities organized by Lafayette students during the eighth annual Literacy Day celebration 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 29 in the Marlo Room of Farinon College Center and the basement of Marquis Hall. Participants, ages 5-16, will be divided between the traditional Literacy Day program, where groups participate in activities around a centralized theme, and a Teen Conference, where the older children will gain the extra benefit from activities and workshops more suitable for their age. These workshops will begin to introduce the importance of further education and career building for the young teens.

Student Movement Against Cancer Holds Fund-raiser Registration and Kick-Off Event Student Movement Against Cancer (SMAC) is holding a kick-off event 12:15-1 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 6 in Oechsle Hall room 224. Individuals and teams will be able to register for SMAC’s overnight campus-wide party being held April 25-26. For SMAC's overnight event, students and faculty will be staying up for one night in honor and memory of those who have been affected by cancer. The event will serve as a fund-raiser for Lehigh Valley Hospital's Cancer Center in Allentown, Pa. The money will assist in the revitalization of the Infusion Unit for chemotherapy treatments and in creating a mural for the pediatric oncology patients.

Meaghan Cherico ’09 (Carmel, N.Y.) is an international affairs major. She is a member of Alpha Phi sorority. Each sorority at Lafayette has a main philanthropy project and hosts programs to raise money to give to its charity of choice. The project that the ladies of Alpha Phi support is called the Alpha Phi Foundation, which focuses on women’s cardiac care. The sorority holds numerous fund raisers to support the cause. Members also volunteer weekly at the after-school program for the kids of Easton at Saint Anthony’s.

Dial for Darfur From 12-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and Thursday, Nov. 29, Lafayette’s chapter of Amnesty International will be hosting a “Dial for Darfur” event in the Landis Atrium of Farinon College Center. Students are encouraged to join the members of Amnesty International during the lunch hour in calling or text-messaging the White House to voice concerns against the human rights violations that are occurring in Darfur. Amnesty members will be offering their own phones for students to borrow. However, students are encouraged to bring their own phone so that they do not have to wait in line to call.

Campus Community will Tackle Hunger and Homelessness Nov. 10-17 Students will have multiple opportunities on campus and in the surrounding community to participate in National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week from Saturday, Nov. 10 through Saturday Nov. 17. The week’s activities are sponsored by the Landis Community Outreach Center’s Building Inclusive Communities (BIC) team and Foundation for the Awareness and Alleviation of Poverty (FAAP). John Colatch, director of religious life and advisor of BIC, hopes that students will walk away with a new perspective on the reality of the issues of hunger and homelessness.

Informal Green Committee Spreads Environmental Awareness on Campus The Informal Green Committee is comprised of faculty, staff, and students from Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP) who come together once a month to discuss ways they can improve environmental practices on campus, such as recycling and energy conservation. The group has been in existence for about six years. It is known as “informal” because last year a formal green environmental committee was formed at the request of President Daniel Weiss. According to Katalin Fabian, assistant professor of government and law and member of the informal committee, the informal committee handles more of the activist end while the formal deals with more administrative issues.

Dodgeball for a Good Cause
On Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 pm, LAF is sponsoring its 4th Annual Charity Dodgeball Tournament in Kamine Gym. Sign-ups for teams will be held Sept. 17-21 and Sept. 24 in Farinon Atrium during lunch (12 pm- 1 pm). This year’s tournament will be donating the money to Third Street Alliance. Third Street Alliance, located in downtown Easton, seeks to serve the community through various programs such as a child care center, adult activities, and a homeless shelter for women and children. All teams must have 6-10 players, and the entry fee is $25 per team. The winning teams receive tickets to this year’s Lafayette-Lehigh football game.

First-Year Students Participate in Pre-Orientation Community Service Program
Before ever attending a class or even going through New Student Orientation, more than 30 members of the Class of 2011 will begin their college experience by doing volunteer service in the community. Thirty-one first-year students will participate in Lafayette’s annual Pre-Orientation Service Program, run by the Landis Community Outreach Center, Aug. 19-22. An additional 20 returning upper-level students, all veterans of pre-orientation service in previous years, will coordinate the activities. They include mathematics major Joanna Norelli ’08 (Langhorne, Pa.), this year’s executive director, who completed much of the preliminary programming.

Tom Ferrante ’07 will be Keynote Speaker at Independent Living Celebration
Tom Ferrante ’07 was keynote speaker for the 17th Annual Independent Living Month Celebration and Community Awards Ceremony. The economics and business graduate was born without a tibia in either leg and with only a partial fibula in his right leg. This did not stop him from leading a normal and active life. Ferrante began wrestling in the sixth grade and has since competed on the national level. He was a member of Lafayette Wrestling when he was a first-year student and a senior and has participated in the Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships. He is also an avid skier and has been on the slopes since he was nine years old. Ferrante talked about his successes in life and sports despite his disabilities.

Student Group Opens Doors for Easton Youth
Felix Forster ’09 founded DreamsWork last semester as an offshoot of Lafayette’s Foundation for the Awareness and Alleviation of Poverty. Through a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club’s Easton Teen Center, the project provides local teenagers with funding and guidance to launch and maintain small-business ideas. The group provides micro-credit loans, usually under $200, to Easton teens in order to start a small enterprise. When the company begins to make a profit, the loan is repaid. “Young people have many passions and talents, which they might not develop further for lack of encouragement or persistence,” Forster explains. “We hope to establish the financial and entrepreneurial basis to show them that their dreams work.”

Ryan Osterweil ’08 Receives Hillel Leadership Award
Ryan Osterweil ’08 (Forest Hills, N.Y.) is a recipient of the 15th Annual B’nai B’rith Levy Hillel Leadership Award. The award recognizes students’ contributions to their Hillel Society chapters and campus communities. The panel of judges chose Osterweil for his campus involvement, awareness of the broader Jewish community, general leadership qualities, and strength of character. Robert Weiner, Jones Professor of History and director of Lafayette’s chapter of Hillel, says Osterweil has been a dedicated member of the group since he was a first-year student.

Lafayette’s Best Buddies Named Outstanding Chapter of the Year
Lafayette’s chapter of Best Buddies was named Outstanding Chapter of the Year at the Best Buddies Ball held at DeSales University April 21. This semester’s coordinator Steven Roe '08 (Lackawaxen, Pa.) was on hand to accept the award. Operated through the Landis Community Outreach Center, Lafayette's Best Buddies chapter has garnered accolades in the past. Last year’s director Nate Parker ’08 (Milford, N.H.), a biology major, was named Outstanding College Buddy Director of the Year. “We’re very proud of the work being done through our Best Buddies program,” says Amber Zuber, assistant director of the Landis Center.

Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Delta Rho Host Dance Marathon this Weekend The campus community will dance the night away for a cause this weekend. Pi Beta Phi sorority and Kappa Delta Rho fraternity will host the 28th Annual Dance Marathon from 5-5 p.m. Friday, April 20 to Saturday, April 21 in the Marlo Room, Farinon College Center. To the theme of “I LOVE the 90s,” dancers will raise money through sponsors including local businesses, alumni, parents, and students, by dancing for 24 hours straight. The event also includes live bands, DJs throughout the night, games, activities, and will end with a lip-sync contest.
