Alumni chapters bring together Lafayette graduates to begin and renew friendships with one another and strengthen bonds to the College. They enjoy baseball and hockey outings, luncheons featuring faculty or alumni speakers, museum trips, welcoming receptions for incoming students, presidential events, service projects, tailgates, happy hours, and many more activities. President Dan Weiss discussed the new strategic plan and future of the College during a chapter dinner Jan. 9 at St. Francis Yacht Club on the Marina. He addressed the same topics Jan. 10 at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club in Menlo Park.

He will speak on “The Case for Conscription,” summarizing arguments for and against compulsory military service and presenting new evidence based on research. The Central Connecticut and Westchester/Fairfield chapters watched the Bridgeport Sound Tigers take on the Hartford Wolfpack in hockey action March 30 at The Arena at Harbor Yard. The event featured a catered reception in the third-floor Tigers Den.

The chapter celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of the Marquis de Lafayette with cocktails Sept. 6 at J. Timothy’s in Plainville.

Alumni enjoyed conversation and networking Aug. 9 at the City Steam Brewery Café in Hartford. Martin coordinated the event.

Lafayette Alumni Night at The Olive Bar kicked off plans to revitalize the chapter June 20 at The Olive Bar in Unionville. In addition to Martin, officers elected for 2007-09 were Thomson, vice president, and Jen Mackey Burke '99, secretary-treasurer. Staats attended.

The chapter volunteered at the Capital Area Food Bank April 12 as part of Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service. Alumni sorted and prepared food for local distribution.

Rado Pribic, Oliver Edwin Williams Professor of Languages and chair of the international affairs program, presented “Globalization at Lafayette College” at the Leopard Luncheon April 11 at Marco Polo Restaurant. Past speakers in the series have included Alumni Affairs Director Sherri Jones, Feb. 21; Ilan Peleg, Charles A. Dana Professor of Social Science, Oct. 5; Trustee Pamela Gaary Holran ’88, June 20; and head football coach Frank Tavani, April 19.

Alumni from Bucknell and Lehigh joined the chapter March 13 for Happy Hour at Mackey’s Public House.

The chapter enjoyed a tasting of wines from the Southern Hemisphere with a wine specialist on hand at Best Cellars in Arlington Feb. 27. Joe Samaritano ’91, director of annual leadership gifts, and Liz Hertneck, assistant director of the annual fund, attended.

The chapter joined with alumni from Bucknell and Lehigh to watch the Washington Capitals take on the Montreal Canadiens Jan. 31 at the Verizon Center.

The chapter enjoyed dinner at McGarvey’s Saloon and Oyster Bar by the city dock in Annapolis before the men’s basketball team defeated Navy Jan. 19.

Holiday Happy Hour took place with alumni from Lafayette, Bucknell, and Lehigh Dec. 6 at Ireland's Four Fields (formerly Ireland's Four Provinces). Unwrapped gifts were collected for Toys for Tots.

The chapter enjoyed a luncheon Nov. 29 at the United States Chamber of Commerce building, where Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55, president emeritus of Lafayette, spoke on “Higher Education in the 21st Century” and his work as a member of the Spellings Commission on the Future of Higher Education. Rothkopf, Lafayette president from 1993-2005, now serves as senior vice president and counselor to the president at the United States Chamber of Commerce.

Kimberly Ann Valliere ’01 hosted the annual Lafayette-Lehigh telecast party Nov. 17 at Grand Slam Sports Bar.

The chapter took in the Impressionists by the Sea exhibit Nov. 8 at The Phillips Collection.

A happy hour gathering welcomed area Class of 2007 alumni from Lafayette and Lehigh Sept. 20 at Fado Irish Pub.

The chapter had a tailgate Sept. 8 before the football game at Georgetown. Complimentary food was provided.

Susan '76 and George Carras hosted a reception with light fare July 24 at their home in Potomac, Md., to welcome the Class of 2011. Hughes and 33 others attended.

Twenty-one people from the chapter attended a baseball outing featuring the Nationals vs. the Colorado Rockies at RFK Stadium July 21.

Young alumni from Lafayette, Lehigh, Bucknell, and Holy Cross gathered for an evening boat cruise on the Potomac River July 13. As the boat passed by the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and other landmarks in the nation’s capital, the 65 attendees mingled and enjoyed cocktails as well as gorgeous weather. The boat returned to Georgetown where many alumni continued socializing at one of the waterfront restaurants, Tony & Joe’s. The chapter plans to make this Patriot League event an annual summer outing.

McVay and Christina Griffin ’99, chapter vice president, have registered the chapter as a member of the Capital Alumni Network (CAN). The organization fosters interaction among college alumni chapters in the area. CAN events are posted on the group’s web site.

Events under consideration include a Lafayette-Lehigh golf outing, a visit to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and a reception with a presentation by a Lafayette professor.

Alumni gathered for a Patriot League Happy Hour March 14 at Coogan’s to watch American defeat Colgate for the Patriot League Men's Basketball Championship.

The chapter watched the men’s basketball team take on Holy Cross Feb. 9 at The Hart Center in Worcester. After the game, Leopards fans gathered at The Flying Rhino Cafe and Watering Hole.

The chapter held a tailgate at Harvard Stadium preceding the Oct. 13 Lafayette football game.

Young alumni enjoyed happy hour to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birthday of the Marquis de Lafayette Sept. 6 at Kinsale Irish Pub and Restaurant.

Campbell organized an outing to see the Red Sox take on the Chicago White Sox July 19. Before the game, alumni enjoyed a buffet at Boston University’s African Presidential Archives and Research Center. Hughes and 86 others attended.

Alumni reconstructed a section of split rail fence that marks a Continental light infantry position during the Battle of Monmouth. Following the project, Monmouth Park’s chief historian, Garry Stone, led an onsite discussion of the Marquis de Lafayette’s role at the Battle of Monmouth. Purcell coordinated the event.

The first Lafayette Day at McCarter Theatre featured a matinee showing of Argonautika March 29. The event began with an afternoon mixer featuring light refreshments, desserts, and beverages in the private dining room of Princeton Theological Seminary’s Mackay Center.

The chapter enjoyed a buffet social prior to the Lafayette ice hockey team’s game at Princeton Oct. 13. The event began at Triumph Brewing Company and continued at Baker Arena on Princeton’s campus.

Jack Bourger ’71 hosted 41 guests for an event welcoming incoming students in the Class of 2011 Aug. 2.

The annual trip to see the cherry blossoms at Brooklyn Botanic Garden took place April 26.

The chapter teamed up with New York Cares during Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service April 12 to clean up a public space as part of Hands on New York Day. Jon Fields ’88 coordinated the event.

Chapter members challenged their culinary skills and prepared their own meal at Miette Culinary Studio Feb. 6. The event included dinner and wine.

Lafayette Dinner Club concluded with the Beach Blast BBQ April 16. The program featured themed dinners created by Chef Michael Kramlich for students, alumni, family, and other members of the Lafayette community in the Bergethon Room of Marquis Hall.

The chapter volunteered at the Center for Animal Health and Welfare April 12 as part of Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service. Volunteers organized donations in the garage, cleaned up the center’s grounds and kennels, walked dogs and brushed cats, and painted indoors.

The renovations of MacCracken Varsity Field House were featured at the annual spring tailgate, which preceded the baseball game against Bucknell and softball game against Lehigh April 5 at Metzgar Fields.

The third annual Lafayette Family Skate took place March 8 at the Steel Ice Center, Bethlehem.

Alumni enjoyed dinner at Marquis Hall March 2 and heard a firsthand report on the January interim class The Open Wall & 21st Century Europe, in which students traveled to Berlin, Munich, and Prague.

The chapter made a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art Jan. 5 to see its Renoir Landscapes exhibit.

The chapter visited historic downtown Bethlehem Nov. 29 to dine and tour the 1758 Sun Inn, which has ties to the Marquis de Lafayette. Part of the proceeds went toward the Sun Inn preservation effort.

Events for Lafayette-Lehigh Week included the fifth annual pre-game tailgate Nov. 14 at Looper’s Grille & Bar and the annual Lafayette-Lehigh Football Dinner at The Pomfret Club Nov. 15, featuring head coach Frank Tavani and the senior players.

The annual LaBarre Tailgate, featuring members, staffs, and friends of the Lafayette basketball programs, took place Sept. 22, leading up to the home football game against Princeton.

A bus trip took alumni to tours of the Harley Davidson Plant and Moon Dancer Vineyard & Winery in York Aug. 24.

The annual Football Forum with Tavani took place Aug. 1 in Pfenning Alumni Center. Alumni Affairs Director Sherri Jones was among the 55 people in attendance.

Past luncheons have featured Alan Childs, professor of psychology, March 27; veterans of previous Lafayette-Lehigh football games Nov. 15; Carol Rowlands ’81, director of admissions, Oct. 18; and Tavani, Sept. 13.

Joined by the Jersey Shore South and South Jersey chapters, the chapter volunteered at PhilAbundance April 12 as part of Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service. Twenty-one volunteers labeled and boxed numerous crates of pasta for local distribution. Ellen Poriles Weiler ’83 coordinated the event.

Leonard hosted a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of the Marquis de Lafayette Sept. 6 at the General Lafayette Inn. The chapter also celebrated the anniversary with a weekend of events Sept. 8-9. The program included meals, tours led by Metzgar Professor of Art Robert S. Mattison, talks by College Archivist Diane Shaw, and a battlefield visit.

Director of Admissions Carol Rowlands ’81 and Janice Egan, assistant director of major gifts, joined a reception for incoming first-year students. “We had another beautiful day at a place next to the lake, with beautiful views of the Adirondacks,” reports Coles. “This year's freshman sendoff was held at the home of Eric LU '82 and Kathy Schulz. We had a good attendance with three incoming freshmen for Lehigh (two of whom are legacies) and one sophomore for Lafayette (whose parents happen to be Lehigh grads). Both alumni and students were heavily engaged in discussions about both schools, today and remembering years past!” Besides Rowlands and Egan, the Lafayette contingent included Jacoby, Paul Kenyon '71 and his guest, Coles and her guest, and Chris Nial ’10.
