EASTON, Pa.(www.lafayette.edu), November 2, 2007 — Tom Dawes ’65, a member of the rock band The Cyrkle and composer for some of the best-known commercial jingles, died Oct. 13.
Comprised of Dawes and Don Danneman ’65, Marty Fried ’66, and Earle Pickens ’65, The Cyrkle recorded the hit single “Red Rubber Ball,” written by Paul Simon and Bruce Woodley. The group was the opening act for the Beatles during their 1966 summer tour.
Dawes wrote music for Alka-Seltzer (“Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz”), 7Up (“7Up, the Uncola"), L’eggs hosiery (“Our L’eggs Fit Your Legs"), American Airlines (“We’re American Airlines, Doing What We Do Best"), and many others. He collaborated with his wife on music for Coke (“Coke Is It”), McDonald’s (“You, You’re the One”), and American Airlines (“Something Special in the Air”).
