The magazine singles out Lafayette and Princeton in a feature story about the top values in private colleges and universities in its April issue. The article accompanies Kiplinger’s latest listing of top values among private schools. The best-value assessment measures both academic quality and affordability, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total. Lafayette places No. 16 among the nation’s top 50 values in liberal arts colleges. President Daniel H. Weiss, Provost Wendy Hill, Arlina DeNardo, director of financial aid, and Debra Perrone ’08 (Fair Lawn, N.J.), a civil engineering major, are including in the article.

The station spotlights Lafayette's Economic Empowerment and Global Learning Project (EEGLP) in a story on President Bill Clinton's Global Initiative University Conference at Tulane University. The EEGLP, headed up by Gladstone Fluney Hutchinson, associate professor of economics and business, relies on an interdisciplinary team of students who work collaboratively with residents of economically disadvantaged communities to facilitate social entrepreneurism and economic sustainability.

Articles discussing the research of Yih-Choung Yu, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, recently appeared in two weekly newsletters. Yu’s research focuses on percutaneous ventricular assist systems, or extracorporeal cardiac assist systems that support the body, specifically the ventricle, in advanced stage heart failure. In Obesity, Fitness, and Wellness Week and Medical Devices & Surgical Technology Week, the article “Studies from Lafayette College update current data on angiology” was printed about Yu’s overall research and “Scientists at Lafayette College publish research in angiology” focuses on his specific findings which were published in the article “Performance prediction of a percutaneous ventricular assist system using nonlinear circuit analysis techniques” in the journal IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.

In the front-page article “Economic Forecast: ‘Great Moderation’ will keep country from recession,’” Edmond Seifried, professor of economics & business, is quoted discussing his views on the “Great Moderation” theory regarding the American economy. The article describes his talk at Commerce Chenago’s Economic Forecast Breakfast held at the Canasawacta Country Club in North Norwich, N.Y., on Feb. 26. A portion of the article focuses on Bethlehem, Pa., as an example used by Seifried to illustrate changes in economy.

College & Research Libraries News, Feb.
Katherine Furlong, associate director for access and administrative services, wrote the article “Real World/Life Rules: The Lafayette College Information Literacy Tour,” which discusses the creation of a choir tour for academic credit. Furlong discusses the brainstorming process and how they combined performing concerts, assigned reading, and class elements to create an educational experience.

Spotlight on Students in Hometown Papers

The Township Journal, March 27
Marquis Scholar Jill Carey ’09 (Sparta, N.J.) received a real-world taste of career possibilities while serving an externship with Dara Brown ’97, vice president for product management at Goldman Sachs in New York City. Carey, who is double-majoring in economics & business and English, had an account of her experience and a picture printed in The Township Journal.

Vernon Hills Review, March 27
A first-person article written by Emily Esteve ’10 (Vernon Hills, Ill.) about her two-week interim abroad course in Guatemala was printed in the Vernon Hills Review. Esteve is a Marquis Scholar who is planning on double-majoring in psychology and Spanish.

Hudson-Litchfield News, March 21
A first-person article written by William “Ben” Towne ’09 (Litchfield, N.H.) about his three-week interim abroad course in South Africa was printed in the weekly newspaper Hudson-Litchfield News. A picture of Towne, a Marquis Scholar who is majoring in electrical and computer engineering, also appeared with the article.

The Post-Standard, March 9
An article about the research of neuroscience graduate Carey Wilson ’07 (Hamilton, N.Y.) entitled “For her kisses, candy is dandy” recently appeared in this Syracuse newspaper. Wilson completed her honors thesis research on the many physical and emotional reasons why people kiss with Wendy Hill, Provost and Rappolt Professor in Neuroscience.
