EASTON, Pa.(www.lafayette.edu), April 8, 2008 — Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP) invites all members of the campus community to get involved in this year’s Earth Week celebration April 19-25.

The week’s theme is “Making Conscious Choices.” Events include discussions with sustainability experts, an Earth Day celebration, an activist picnic, an energy saving competition between dorms, and a Bushkill Creek clean-up.

“Environmental issues cross the borders of all disciplines, so it is important for students to see how such issues relate to their own lives in many ways,” says LEAP treasurer Jennifer Tillman ’10 (Kensington, Md.). “Becoming aware now means we all have the ability to change our actions and still make a real difference.”

Presenting the week’s keynote address will be Greg Pahl, a journalist and author of five books on sustainable living. His lecture, held at 7 p.m. April 23 in Oechsle Hall room 224, will focus on his latest book, The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook: Community Solutions to a Global Crisis (2007).

Another major speaker will be Mark Orlowski, founder and executive director of the Sustainable Endowments Institute, at 4 p.m. April 24 in Oechsle 224. Sustainable Endowments Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainability in campus operations and endowment practices. The organization publishes the annual College Sustainability Report Card, which evaluates and grades key elements of sustainability at United States and Canadian colleges and universities.
