“A career is a lifetime learning process,” he says. “New technologies emerge, and you must educate yourself and deal with them to be successful.”
Wiltshire is a marketer, proposal writer, and mentor for a transportation consulting firm. Previously, he was an assistant engineering manager for engineering consulting firm Michael Baker Jr. Inc.
“I have had the opportunity to mentor young engineers, more recently in the Phoenix area and, in the past, Saudi Arabia, and to pass on to them some of my experience in the field of traffic engineering and highway safety,” he says.
His commitment to the Aztech Partnership and his field earned him the group’s first Lifetime Service Award last year. Aztech is a public-private organization based in Phoenix. Formed to seek a U.S. Department of Transportation model deployment grant, it transforms modern, complex technology into an integrated traveler communication system, achieving travel efficiencies and economic benefits from both the public and private sectors. Aztech received a $7.5 million grant to demonstrate the integration of various emerging technologies called intelligent transportation systems into the transportation infrastructure.
“It was quite a surprise and honor to receive this award,” says Wiltshire. “It is the first one that the Aztech group has presented.”
Although he lives across the country from his alma mater, Wiltshire is seeking ways to stay connected. He is among a group of alumni working with the Office of Alumni Affairs on beginning a Phoenix chapter of the Alumni Association.
Any engineer will agree that strong foundations are necessary for successful structures that can withstand the test of time, and Wiltshire, a civil engineering graduate, received that sturdy foundation at Lafayette for his career in transportation engineering.
“Lafayette provided me with an excellent education in all areas of civil engineering, providing me with solid analytical skills for problem-solving and management,” he says.
