“My parents loved their church, their neighbors, Lafayette College, and Lafayette football,” said Jack Bourger ’71 (right) in his moving remarks at the dedication of Bourger Varsity Football House during Reunion weekend. “Lafayette football was a lifetime of friendships to them, and it was the Lafayette friendships that sustained them through their later years.”

The name of the building recognizes the generosity of Bourger and Selena Vanderwerf, who named it in memory of Jack’s parents, Eugene J. (Mike) ’44 and Ruth P’71. Also honored at the ceremony were several dozen other alumni and friends who supported the construction of the football house. In addition to Jack Bourger, speakers were Edward W. Ahart ’69, chair of the Trustees’ Committee on Athletics and Student Affairs; President Daniel Weiss; Frank Tavani, head football coach; and Marcel Quarterman ’08, an economics and business major from Philadelphia and a cocaptain of the 2007 football team.

The opening of the 24,000-square-foot varsity house at the west end of Fisher Field completes the transformation of the football facilities into the state-of-the-art Fisher Stadium. Principal contributors to the comprehensive $23 million stadium project also include James R. ’77 and Tracey Fisher and the F.M. Kirby Foundation.

“What does this mean to the campus?” asked Tavani, who has coached the Leopards to three straight Patriot League titles. “It means we now have the finest facility in the country at any level, bar none, and it’s something we can all be proud of.”
