LAFAYETTE TODAY

Remembering June

Reflecting upon remembrances of June Schlueter as his professor of English, a Lafayette alum mused: “‘You have to take real pleasure in finding small things, and you have to have faith in the accumulation of details,’ June told me. ‘You have to be in perpetual readiness for surprises. You can’t just speculate and imagine and make inferences; you have to earn your knowledge.’”

In stepping down as Lafayette’s esteemed provost of 13 years, the selfless Schlueter discovered collegial surprises, and that she earned more than knowledge—she earned the respect and admiration of the Lafayette community.

At its May 18 meeting, the Lafayette faculty cited her: “as a distinguished administrator, teacher, and scholar, she has led the faculty through a time of remarkable curricular reform and has helped us improve the quality and diversity of the student body. As chief academic officer, she has encouraged and supported the development of the faculty, individually and collectively, with dedication, fairness, and a concentration on the best in every person.”

President Dan Weiss called Schlueter a “scholarly administrator” and said he was inspired by her ability to continue her many academic pursuits while still working at a high level as provost.

At the annual trustee-faculty dinner May 19, on behalf of the administration Leslie F. Muhlfelder ’81, vice president for human resources and general counsel, read a letter from President Emeritus Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55, with whom Schlueter served as provost for 12 years. Riley K. Temple ’71, secretary of the board of trustees, spoke on behalf of the board, presenting Schlueter with a framed, limited-edition print of the Tiffany stained glass window depicting the death of Sir Philip Sidney that is installed in Skillman Library’s main reading room.
