The team of Ekaterina
Jager ’06, Aydin Gerek ’07, and Jacob Carson ’06 placed in the top 15 percent of more than 500 teams participating in the Mathematical Association of America’s annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, called by Time magazine “the world’s toughest math test.” It’s the fifth time in six years that Lafayette has placed in the top 15 percent. Lafayette’s top scorer, Jinjin Qian ’08, placed No. 256 among all individual participants.
“The Putnam exam represents the highest level of undergraduate mathematics problem competition, with hundreds of students participating from Harvard, MIT, Princeton, and other top universities,” says Derek Smith, assistant professor of mathematics. “Lafayette’s performance over the past several years certainly places it among the top liberal arts colleges in the country.”
