Journal Takes Wing

Ilan Peleg, Dana Professor of Government and Law, was adviser to Lori Weaver '06 in her honors research on the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.
AS EDITOR of the journal Israel Studies Forum, Ilan Peleg, Dana Professor of Government and Law, transformed what was once an informational newsletter of the Association for Israel Studies into a full-fledged scholarly publication featuring peer-reviewed articles, book reviews, and research notes.

Formed in 1985, AIS is an international, interdisciplinary scholarly society devoted to the academic and professional study of modern Israel. For two decades, it issued its own semi-annual publication, Israel Studies Newsletter, and its successor, Israel Studies Bulletin, “to facilitate a link among AIS members in between their annual meetings,” explains Peleg, who is author of Human Rights in the West Bank and Gaza: Legacy and Politics, which was named an Outstanding Scholarly Book by CHOICE, the publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries.

He raised tens of thousands of dollars, appointed a high-powered board of editors, and forged a multi-year agreement with Berghahn Books of Oxford, England, and New York City to publish the journal. “The results were swift and encouraging. The number of submitted papers and their quality rose appreciably, and the content became increasingly interdisciplinary,” Peleg says.

Benji Berlow ’06, a double major in Jewish studies and psychology, served as editorial assistant.
