Policy Studies: An Interdisciplinary Approach

A NEW, interdisciplinary major in policy studies will emphasize a global perspective in all its concentration areas, which include arts and media policy, economic policy and homeland security, science policy, and social policy.

Faculty representing all academic divisions are affiliated. “I am especially excited about the connections among policy studies, engineering, and the sciences,” says Mark Crain, Simon Professor of Political Economy, who led the program’s development with a committee of alumni. “Many critical global challenges require the combination of technical scientific knowledge and knowledge of policy processes.”

Fred Benson ’59 chaired the alumni panel. “Graduates in all careers must understand that everything they will do is bound by a complex web of federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and by treaties among nations. The major is a perfect approach to insuring that students are prepared to thrive in that demanding environment,” he says.
