LAFAYETTE TODAY
Leading Roles
MEMBERS OF the engineering faculty are heading divisions of the American Society for Engineering Education this year. Polly Piergiovanni, associate professor of chemical engineering, was elected chair of the chemical engineering division, and Kristen Sanford Bernhardt, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, is chairing the
civil engineering division.
ASEE, a national organization of deans, professors, instructors, students, and industry reps, is dedicated to promoting and improving engineering and engineering technology education.
Sanford Bernhardt will
recruit new members among civil engineering faculty nationwide and act as a liaison between division members and ASEE’s board of directors, among other responsibilities. Last year, as her division’s program chair, she organized technical and social programs
for the society’s 113th National Conference and Exposition.
Piergiovanni says, “Our faculty believes that teaching, not just research, is important and values engineering education and pedagogy. We hope that putting our efforts into leading the divisions will encourage other faculty to become involved. When I first became involved with ASEE, Lafayette did not seem to be well known, but now the colleagues I see at meetings know and respect our engineering program.”
