Students Hit Wall StreetAlumni in financial services share insights on careers
About 70 students interested in the finance field had a unique networking and career assessment experience in October as they traveled to New York City for Finance Day. Cosponsored by Career Services and the Investment Club, the event gave students the opportunity to gain a broader awareness of careers in the financial industry, practice and improve networking skills, and speak with over 20 alumni (and some of their coworkers) about full-time and summer employment. Finance Day was a great way to network and get a feel for the type of company and service I would like to be involved in after graduation, says Amanda Bochner 05, a double major in international economics & commerce and Spanish. Economics and business major Maurice Bennett 06 realized a number of benefits from the event, including insight into specific careers he might pursue after graduation.
Just having the opportunity to ask someone, especially an alumnus, what they do on a day-to-day basis, there was more of a personal connection, he says. The day included a career forum on employment tracks within the financial industry, such as investment banking, asset management, equity research, sales and trading, corporate finance, and cash management. Alumni who attended the event, along with the companies they represented, were: Chip Lewis 91, Dick Linthicum 66, Scott Littlejohn 84, Francis Mustaro 72, and Keith OBrien 03, Citigroup; David Berdon 92, Goldman Sachs; Jeremy Arfield 93, Braeden Rogers 00, Jeffrey Schor 79, and Martha Heinze 86, JP Morgan Chase; John Forrey 83, Katie McAdams 82, Dana Morris 00, and Saad Rasool 02, Merrill Lynch; Victor Goldman 96, New England Financial; Frank Austin 92, Charles Chesebrough 87, Michael McDonough 79, and Larissa Reick 97, The Bank of New York; and Claire Byers 89, Andrew Cooper 03, and Dave Thomas 00, UBS Investment Bank. Dick Simmermacher, father of economics and business major William Simmermacher 07 (Scarsdale, N.Y.), also attended, representing Goldman Sachs. | ||||
