PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Making Lafayette greater by challenging ourselves

On July 4, 1917, not long after American forces had arrived in Paris, Col. Charles E. Stanton, an aide to Gen. John J. Pershing, concluded his Independence Day remarks at the tomb of the Marquis de Lafayette by proclaiming, “Lafayette, we are here!”

Those stirring words have assumed a new significance for me since I became Lafayette’s president. They attest specifically, of course, to the abiding gratitude of the United States for the service rendered by Gen. Lafayette during the American War for Independence. But they also inspire those of us who are privileged to be affiliated with Lafayette College to do our utmost to honor the ideals of the extraordinary individual whose name our college bears.

I believe that we can best uphold those ideals by having trustees, faculty, alumni, students, staff members, local leaders, and others with a stake in the success of Lafayette’s educational mission share in the development of an exciting and innovative vision for the future. The more thought-fully and forthrightly we challenge ourselves to make the College better, the greater it can be.

I am delighted to be president of Lafayette during this period of unprecedented opportunity. I feel even more fortunate to be part of such a warm and welcoming community, and I would like to conclude this message by thanking all of you who have helped make our first five months on College Hill so enjoyable for Sandra and me and for our family.
