Internships Enhance Engineering Education

A military base and an overseas company provided enriching internships for two engineering students this summer.

Mechanical engineering major Andrew Rogers '03 served the U.S. Army at Ft. Monmouth, N.J., helping ensure that contractors' work on a mobile battle command center met Army specifications.

Arno Kohler '82 (left) and Andrew Rogers '03 check the operation of the gas particulate filtering unit on the roof of the mobile battle command center.
"For example, one of the contractors was trying to stack the shelters on top of each other and wanted to do it three high," explains Rogers, who will return to the base in January. "They did a finite element analysis-a major report. I looked over that and determined it was sufficient. The good thing is that I had just learned about finite element analysis in a class last year."

His supervisor was Arno Kohler '82, assistant product manager, who has worked for the Army since graduating with a degree in civil engineering.

Three of Rogers' former varsity track and field teammates, Mark Kitz '00, an electrical engineering graduate, and Michael Schwartz '01 and John Smolenski '01, electrical and computer engineering graduates, work as computer engineers at the base's main post.

Through a new program established by the department of foreign languages and literatures and University for Applied Sciences in Zittau/ Görlitz, chemical engineering major Gretel Raibeck '03 interned with fit GmbHt, a soap and detergent manufacturer in Hirschfelde, Germany. Raibeck conducted tests to determine what substances could be incorporated in the company's dishwashing detergent to prevent calcium deposits on glasses. She also used a device to gauge how much calcium could be absorbed before it precipitates out of the solution.

"Water is turbid [containing significant suspended sediment or foreign particles] long before the human eye can see it," Raibeck explains. "I was testing with a light sensor that could detect when particles were blocking signals from the light and a mirror." The company will use her data to devise and test potential new product formulations.

Gretel Raibeck '03 uses a volumetric pipet to prepare a titration for suspended particles.

Speaking German throughout the experience greatly improved her command of the language, says Raibeck, who also found time to travel to Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Nuremberg, and Dresden, as well as spend a weekend in Prague.
