FINALIST - 2006

Danielle Pollaci
The Lafayette ideal might be seen in Campus Pizza with some friends, volunteering through Landis, or studying at Skillman. The ideal does not have a particular hair color, style of dress, or political affiliation. The ideal is really the desire to enhance Lafayette by creating positive change. As a result, I realized early that I had the power to make my Lafayette experience, not in isolation, but rather, as part of a community.

I have strived, both academically and socially, to empower and learn from others and generate a collective effort to improve campus life. As a Writing Associate, I enjoyed encouraging my fellow students to not only improve their writing, but also take ownership of their work. Similarly, by tutoring ESL in Easton, I was able to use my skills to improve the lives of others, while also learning about the experiences of the adults I was helping.

Through my involvement in the Students for Social Justice (SSJ) and the Association of Lafayette Feminists (ALF) I have had the opportunity to voice my opinions on political and social issues that I care deeply about. But more importantly, the events that I have helped organize on campus have provided other members of Lafayette and Easton with safe spaces to do the same. This is essential in maintaining respect and understanding of all viewpoints. As a leading member of these groups, I have mentored students to attain leadership roles of their own, which ensures that Lafayette will continue to produce change makers.

One of the most rewarding experiences I have had was organizing the annual Take Back the Night event, which is aimed at ending violence against women. Take Back the Night has consistently brought together a diverse group of people that is concerned about this issue and willing to take action.

My greatest contribution to Lafayette has been my belief in my own ability and the ability of others to cause change and my willingness to work collectively to realize this change.
