FINALIST - 2007

Brad Maurer
In reading the description of what the Pepper Prize winner is intended to represent, a “well-rounded, educated” senior with both “a sound academic record” and “noteworthy participation in college activities and student life, which contribute to the advancement of the college on and off campus,” I have come to a few conclusions. First, it seems that the spirit of this award, and of a liberal arts education in general, is found in the term “well-rounded.” In my time at Lafayette, the narrow careerist path has never infringed on my desire to sample from everything I possibly could. I’ve had wonderful experiences in so many disciplines, from science and mathematics, to philosophy and religion, to music, theater, and athletics. Even with the twin monoliths of commitment in my life being academics and football, I thought it extremely important to take advantage of as many opportunities as I could to expand the breadth of my knowledge through my experiences here. As for contributing to Lafayette’s advancement, this is a judgment I cannot make for myself. I can only say that I have tried to ensure that my experiences outside the classroom have been as wide-ranging as those within it. I also feel, due to the unique nature of my athletic position, that my being a public figure has caused me to become something of a spokesman for Lafayette. This is a role I have relished, because it gives me the opportunity to offer praise and gratitude to the institution that has provided me with so much, and I hope that my efforts have in some way contributed to the advancement of the college. I don’t know what comes next. I do know that I will be ready for it, armed with the tools I have acquired from Lafayette.
