FINALIST - 2005

Reco Collins

Throughout life we are constantly faced with choices. Some of the choices we make are simple with little or no effect; there are those difficult choices, however, that have lasting effects on our lives and those around us. Attending Lafayette College was a simple choice for me to make, but one that has had life-long effects, considering the knowledge that I have gained and the contributions that I have made to the community.

Looking back at my Lafayette Experience, it is one that I will truly treasure for the rest of my life, considering the goals that I accomplished and the opportunities I have received. My main goal while attending Lafayette was to achieve academic excellence, an objective I accomplished and maintained throughout my time here. Another personal goal was to enhance cross-cultural relationships. Being the President of the Brothers of Lafayette, this goal became a reality. Under my leadership, the Brothers of Lafayette have worked with the Landis Outreach Center, Association of Black Collegians, ISA, the Health Center and various campus offices and organizations in order to promote cultural and community growth and awareness. My study abroad experiences in the Netherlands, Kenya, and Tanzania have provided me with more insight on cross-cultural relations on a global level. These experiences have molded me into a more well-rounded individual in terms of intellect and culture.

I have also organized events that have placed Lafayette on the forefront of thought-provoking issues that have galvanized our student life. Most notably is being the co-founder of a very successful organization, “Holla Back”, which got over 500 Lafayette students registered to vote in the 2004 Presidential election. Holla Back allowed Lafayette students the opportunity to recognize their power [voice] to affect a national issue.

I have worked very hard to maintain a strong academic record and to improve cross-cultural relationships at Lafayette, a place that has been like a home away from home for me. I hope that my purpose here has been meaningful, my efforts to strengthen the Lafayette Experience for other students and the legacy of programs that I have participated in will continue well into the future.
