FINALIST - 2005

Emily Fogelberg

Since arriving at Lafayette, I have occasionally been “accused” of trying to save the world, with friends and family joking, “It’s not your responsibility.” My attempt to live up to the “Lafayette Ideal” has been about taking advantage of opportunities, learning about people and places around me, and working with friends, colleagues, and mentors to make the most of every day. And that’s the starting point for being a change-agent in and beyond our college community.

My Lafayette Experience has been one of powerful personal change and intellectual growth, and through it I have discovered an enriching interconnectedness between academics, athletics, personal relationships, and helping others on and off campus. Rigorous courses, study abroad, and research have motivated me to search well beyond the classroom while striving to be a productive citizen in the broader community. Helping young people ride at Equi-librium has taught me to place more purposeful value on the physical and psychological benefits of equestrian sports, in the process showing me the devotion, perseverance, and passion needed in every facet of life. Coordinating the Best Buddies program, I have gained greater appreciation for the nurturing and multiplying power of friendship. Friends, staff, and faculty have challenged me to think differently, to try new things and to reach for goals that previously seemed unattainable. I hope that I have helped others to do the same.

At Lafayette, I’ve learned that the possibilities are endless when you do what you love and when you have courage and determination to follow your convictions. I have strived to do just that in the classroom, on the athletic field, and through interpersonal relationships. Those are the first steps—if not to saving the world—to making a significant difference in it, one step at a time.
